19208vo., First Edition, with a portrait and 10 plates on 7, fore-edge browning slightly; original regimental grey cloth, upper board blocked with crest in black, upper board and backstrip lettered in black, covers mildly age-stained else a very good, clean copy. The astonishing, if gruelling, account of the 25th (Navvies) Battalion of The Middlesex Regiment in WWI, and THE ONLY BRITISH UNIT HISTORY IN THE RUSSIAN INTERVENTION. 'Ward's story really belongs in the main to the 'after-the-war' period in Russia. He gives an interesting account of Admiral Koltchak, whom he admired, and shows how insuperable were the difficulties which that unfortunate patriot had to face. It is now beginning to be recognised that Koltchak was, with the possible exception of Wrangel, far and away the ablest of the White [Russian] commanders. For the rest, his [Ward's] story is one of gallantry and endurance in frightful conditions displayed by troops for the most part of a low physical category' (Falls). 'In 1915 [Ward] raised the 25th Navvies Battalion, which was then ordered to the Far East and ultimately to Siberia to support Admiral Koltchak.' (Sutcliffe). Very scarce. Enser, p.68; Falls, p.236; Sutcliffe, p.328; not recorded by White.
19292 vols., roy. 8vo., Second Edition, on laid paper, with coloured frontispieces, title-vignettes, 6 fine coloured plates (mainly of uniform), 23 plates in monochrome, a folding panorama, 9 folding maps and 7 full-page maps (coloured or coloured in outline), and 32 illustrations (many full-page) and numerous tables and pedigrees in the text, free endpapers lightly browned; original regimental cloth, badge blocked in silver on upper boards, gilt backs, a very good, bright, clean set. One of the great regimental histories. The set comprises Vol. I: 1794-1816; Vol. II: 1816-1898. Including the 75th Regiment 1787-1881. The first editions of these two volumes were published in 1901 and 1903 respectively. The first two volumes constitute a set in themselves. A third volume by Gardyne followed in 1939, and fourth, fifth and sixth volumes by Falls (1958), Miles (1961) and A.D. Gardyne (1972). White, p.120.
20192 vols., sm. folio, with many thousands of photographs and maps throughout, and photographic endpapers; original laminated pictorial boards, a fine set in unclipped dustwrapper, the whole housed in publisher's board slip-case. A predictably impressive compilation from the ATB team headed by Karel Margry, based on more than twenty years' research into the battlefields. Covers in great detail both the air (Market) and the ground (Garden) elements of the greatest airborne operation in history. A bright set of a cornerstone of any Arnhem collection.
19558vo., First Edition, with 16 full-page maps in the text; regimental grey cloth, crest blocked in gilt on upper cover, gilt back, a very good, clean copy in the dustwrapper, the latter mildly rubbed, creased and frayed at edges. The author served with this famous Canadian regiment throughout WWII. In 1940 it served briefly in France, returned to the UK for further training, landed in Sicily in July 1943, fought on the Italian mainland until early 1945 and then took part in the final battles for Germany. The well-written narrative is based mainly on movements and engagements. SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THE DUSTWRAPPER. Perkins, p.150
