Includes register of officers and personnel. This territorial battalion served in Malta, Alexandria, Mudros, Gallipoli (October 1915-January 1916) and Rouen. Complete with errata leaf. The standard record of the regiment's service in the Great War in which eleven battalions were involved. Includes ROH, honours and decorations, MIDs, units and their COs, depots and POW funds 'Well above the average of regimental histories in interest. He has done his best to procure information from officers who served with the regiment to supplement the generally scant and laconic accounts of the war diaries' (Falls). Accordingly this history is particularly well supplied with maps (albeit some of them sketches in outline). SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO [MAJOR-]GENERAL SIR GEORGE JEFFREYS WITH THE FORMER'S SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON HALF-TITLE. Major-General Sir George Jeffreys (1878-1960) was commissioned in the Grenadier Guards in 1897. He served at the Nile, in the Second Boer War and extensively throughout WWI. Mentioned in despatches several times, he commanded 2Bn in 1915, subsequently 58th Brigade, 57th Brigade, and finally 1st (Guards) Brigade in 1916. In 1917 he was appointed GOC 19th Division. Post-war he served as GOC Light Division British Army of the Rhine and as GOCiC of Southern Command in India before his retirement in 1938. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Jeffreys in 1952. His association with the present work stems from his position as Deputy Lieutenant of the county of Hampshire, Chairman of the Hampshire Territorial Army Association and a decade or so as MP for Petersfield. A NOTABLE ASSOCIATION COPY. LARGE PAPER COPIES ARE EXTREMELY SCARCE. Sutcliffe, p.225; White, p.189.

1995Single sheet measuring 8.0 x 6.5 ins (approx. 20.0 x 17.0 cms), on stationery of 53 (W) Divisional Dinner Club printed in red and black, and dated 20 November 1995; near fine state. THE LETTER IS WRITTEN, DATED AND SIGNED ENTIRELY IN SIR TASKER'S HAND, AND IS SOLD WITH A BRIEF RESUME OF HIS POST-WAR CAREER AND A POOR QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT. Sir Tasker Watkins was gazetted for the Victoria Cross on 2 November 1944. The citation reads: 'On 16 August 1944 at Barfour, Normandy, Lieutenant Watkins' company came under murderous machine-gun fire while advancing through corn fields set with booby traps. The only officer left, Lieutenant Watkins led a bayonet charge with his 30 remaining men against 50 enemy infantry, practically wiping them out. Finally, at dusk, separated from the rest of the battalion, he ordered his men to scatter and after he had personally charged and silenced an enemy machine-gun post, he brought them back to safety. His superb leadership not only saved his men, but decisively influenced the course of the battle'. Sir Tasker Watkins (1918-2007) was commissioned into the Welch Regiment in 1941 and was the first Welshman to win the Victoria Cross in WWII. He retired from the Army as a major in 1946 and entered the law. He was called to the bar in 1948 at the beginning of a distinguished legal career that culminated in his serving as Deputy Chief Justice of England from 1988-1993. He was knighted in 1971 and appointed a CBE in 1990. Watkins was President of the 53 (W) Divisional Dinner Club.

1997Single sheet measuring 6.0 x 6.0 ins (approx. 15.0 x15.0 cms), on blank stationery, and dated 18 June 1997; near fine state. THE LETTER IS WRITTEN, DATED AND SIGNED ENTIRELY IN 'PIP' GARDNER'S HAND, AND IS SOLD WITH A POOR QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT. Philip John 'Pip' Gardner was gazetted for the Victoria Cross on 10 February 1942. The citation reads: 'On 23 November 1931 at Tobruk, Libya, Captain Gardner took two tanks to the rescue of two armoured cars of the King's Dragoon Guards, which were out of action and under heavy attack. Whilst one tank gave covering fire the captain dismounted from the other, hitched a tow rope to one of the cars, then lifted into it an officer, both of whose legs had been blown off. The tow rope broke, so Captain Gardner returned to the armoured car, but was immediately wounded in the arm and leg. Despite this he managed to transfer the wounded man to the second tank and returned to British lines through intense shell-fire'. Philip John 'Pip' Gardner (1914-2003) was serving with 4RTR in 32nd Tank Brigade during Operation CRUSADER, designed to destroy the bulk of Rommel's armour and force him to abandon his siege of Tobruk.
