rif. P12332Lower Bullingham Hereford: Special Air Service Regiment n.d. Pp. 94; demy 4to; printed stiff paper wrappers perforated with plastic binder upper wrapper protected by plastic cover sheet; an in-house photocopied manual; privately published by the Special Air Service Regiment Lower Bullingham Hereford n.d. Marked Private and Confidential. This SAS Bodyguard Training Manual from 22 SAS Stirling Lines is only available to those who undertake the course. This is usually people like The Royal Protection Squad and bodyguards of visiting Foreign Governments or VIP's. The course costs 'a33500vat as at March 2010. In 2009 a member of the regiment died on active service abroad. The MOD in their infinite wisdom refused to pay his army pension to his dependants on the grounds they were never married. This despite the fact they had two young kids and lived together as man and wife in Army married quarters for 12 years! The Families Officer of the Regiment is fighting the case. As you can imagine some of the lads still serving didn't take this too well and decided to take matters into their own hands. Some copies of The Bodyguard Training Manual were "acquired" and are being sold off with the money going direct to the dependants! Special Air Service Regiment unknown
1847rif. 189591Deal: Printed by J. Deveson 1847. The battlefields of the Punjab seen from the ranks First and only contemporary edition of this brief but spirited and entirely unembroidered account in the authentic voice of an enlisted man. The 31st were one of the most heavily engaged units of the conflict seeing action at Mudki Ferozeshah Aliwal and Sobraon. Scarce with just two locations traced BL and Boston Public Library unrecorded at auction. Vivid vignettes from the battle front are set within the context of a diary account of an uneventful voyage back from Calcutta to Gravesend. Cleveland opens on 23 October 1846 "weather continues fine and the wind steady" reminiscing of Moodkee "the first battle in which I had even been engaged I have often since endeavoured to imagine what my feelings were on that occasion but the hurry and confusion of that Action prevented the exercise of thought". One thing remains clear in his memory "So confident were our Officers and men that the Sikh Army was composed of nothing but a rebel mob that they did not believe they would hazard an engagement. this entire ignorance of the Sikh Army it is wonderful that all were alike involved even the Governor and Commander in Chief each of whom it should fairly be supposed ought to have been possessed of correct information on so important a subject". Of Ferozeshah he recalls the "lurid flames" of the burning Sikh camp "gleaming through the darkness diffusing sufficient light to make the horrors of our situation more apparent" the shot from the Sikh guns falling "among us by far to thick and fast to be agreeable". The situation only saved by what Cleveland - along with Sikh commander Tej Singh - read as the Commander in Chief's order for the cavalry to make a "false charge" which was in fact the withdrawal of the Horse Artillery desperately short of ammunition to Ferozepur to resupply while under cavalry escort. At Aliwal the 31st were on the extreme right of the British line "When we had arrived within a short distance of the village under heavy fire from the enemy who were waving their swords and cutting a great variety of menacing capers in front of us General Smith galloped up and said 'take that village boys and carry it along with you' when the whole regiment broke into a rapid double which they did not abate until they had cleared the village captured the guns upon its left and caused the whole of the enemy's left flank to run for dear life. We now quietly took possession of the whole of their camp equipage ammunition and stores; and having amply supplied ourselves. we turned in for the night near the banks of the Sutlej". And so to Sobraon "At 9 A. M. the battle had reached its warmest point - shot and shell were then whizzing through the air in rapid succession. on their fearful missions of mischief. from the muzzles of 150 pieces of ordnance - about half past 9 a low rumbling sound was heard resembling distant thunder which was caused by the report of musquetry - as the infantry ad passed the Enemy's breastworks. thus concluded the most severe contest in the annals of Indian warfare and not a second to any fought in Europe with the exception of Waterloo". Following the ratification of the Treaty of Lahore the 31st marched to Calcutta and embarked for home Cleveland composing this very personal and telling NCO's witness to world-changing events while under weigh. Octavo. pp. 24. Original thin paper printed wrappers. Wraps rubbed and soiled with some minor chips and splits at the edges no loss of text creases to the corners; pale toning and some finger-soiling to the text; but a well preserved copy very good. paperback

Historically significant collection of two original documents recording the expenses for personnel and supplies in the U.S. Army’s stations in the Dakota Territory - Standing Rock Cantonment since 1878 – Fort Yates and Fort Rice on the Upper Missouri River south of Mandan Morton Co. – shortly before and after the Great Sioux Black Hills War of 1876. Both documents were compiled and signed by a U.S. Army career officer and Civil War veteran Lieutenant William Badger. A son of William Badger Sr. the Governor of New Hampshire in 1834-36 he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1848 and worked with several New Hampshire companies Union Manufacturing Co. in Gilmanton Tilton Manufacturing Co. in Tilton &c. During the American Civil War he served in the 4th and later the 9th New Hampshire Volunteer Regiments. In 1866 Badger Jr. was commissioned as a lieutenant in the 6th U.S. Infantry and served with them until his retirement in 1889 See: Babcock E. A War History of the Sixth U.S. Infantry from 1798 to 1903… Kansas City 1903 pp. 107 115 129. During the height of the Sioux Wars in the 1870s Badger served as a quartermaster in several U.S. military posts in the Dakota Territory including Fort Buford and Fort Abraham Lincoln – in the latter when Lt.-Col. George Armstrong Custer’s 1839-1876 7th Cavalry Regiment was stationed there preceding the Battle of the Little Bighorn Fort Life in ‘70’s Recalled// The Fargo Forum. Fargo N.D. 28 July 1929 p. 9. William Badger and Custer were acquainted and the former’s son William Cogswell Badger 1857-1897 then a 19-year-old man “accompanied Lieut. Col. George A. Custer on his expedition into the Black Hills to discover the truth of the rumor of fabulous amounts of gold in the summer of 1874” William C. Badger Pioneer N.D. Man is Dead at Toledo// The Bismarck Tribune January 20 1937 p. 2. In the 1880s William Badger served in Fort Leavenworth Kansas See more about his biography in: Jameson E.O. The Cogswells in America. Boston 184 pp. 207-208; see more. The earlier document was compiled in the Standing Rock Cantonment of the U.S. Army which was renamed Fort Yates in 1878 and is now the headquarters of the federally recognized Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The “Abstract of Expenditures at the Standing Rock Cantonment” is dated December 1875 about half a year before the Battle of the Little Bighorn which resulted in an overwhelming defeat of the U.S. forces and the death of George Custer. The document lists the vouchers paid to “Citizen Employees” an “Interpreter” and for “Extra Duty Mess” for the total amount of $160168. The second document is a 10-page “Quarterly Return of Quartermaster’s Stores Received Issued and Remaining on Hand at Fort Rice in the Quarter ending on the 31st of December 1878.” Badger records the movement of supplies in over a dozen categories: fuel soft wood forage oats corn hay stationery various paper envelopes ink wax pens quills pencils office tape erasers paper folders rubber bands sandboxes letter press & many others barrack & office furniture clock cooking and heating stoves field desks iron safe ice box lockers pans for frying and baking tables tea kettles &c. means of transportation ambulances army wagons blankets saddle brooms a “ferry boat” horses mules jockey sticks “yawl boat” “bob sledges” &c.; veterinary blacksmiths’ carpenters’ masons’ and bricklayers’ saddlers’ tools miscellaneous tools brass sundial hay forks and scales lifting jack paint brushes rubber fire buckets scythes wood saws &c. machinery belting assistant circular saws gumming machines horse medicines and “stores for expenditure” bolts bridle leather cotton twine harness rings horse shoes nails nuts oars rope rivets tar coal wax black & many others. Overall an important collection of original documents providing a compelling insight into the everyday life of the U.S. military posts in the Dakota Territory shortly before and after the Great Sioux War of 1876. An archive of original William Badger’s documents created during his service as a quartermaster in the 6th Infantry in the Dakota Territory is deposited in the special collections of the State Historical Society of North Dakota see more. hardcover
