1933réf. 45395Boston: Houghton Mifflin. Very Good- in Very Good- dust jacket. Second Edition. Hardcover. 8vo; viii 297 pages; Former owner's name on ffep "Susan Mary Jay Alsop / September 30 1938 / Bar Harbor" otherwise clean and secure in original peach/tan cloth binding with titles in red at spine and front board; some toning to endpapers and cloth. Dustjacket has a 1.25 inch closed tear at bottom of front panel and some general creasing and edgewear see images. Second American edition of My Battle Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler in the publisher’s scarce and controversial dust jacket. This autobiographical manifesto by Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler describes the process by which Hitler became anti-Semitic and outlines his political ideology and future plans for Germany. Hitler began writing Mein Kampf while imprisoned following his failed Putsch in Munich in November 1923. Eventually Hitler realized it would have to be a two-volume work; the first volume was published in 1925 and the second in 1926. After slow initial sales the book became a bestseller in Germany following Hitler's rise to power in 1933. E. T. S. Dugdale began writing an English abridgment of the two volume German edition of Mein Kampf in 1931 but finding a publisher proved difficult. Houghton Mifflin secured the rights to the Dugdale abridgment on July 29 1933. The first print run of only 7603 copies priced at $3.00 met with moderate commercial success but elicited condemnation from Jewish American groups across the United States. Houghton Mifflin decided to risk a second edition only 3497 copies with a retail price of $2.50 and a new dust jacket design which resulted in a diplomatic protest from the German government demanding that it be replaced with an approved design from the German publisher Eher Verlag but Houghton Mifflin refused. The dustjacket for the second edition had panels of black red and yellow and a quotation from Dorothy Thompson. The Nazi government objected to the black-red-yellow color scheme which was emblematic of the liberal German revolutions of 1848–49 and the Weimar Republic while the Nazis had returned to the black white red emblems of the German Empire. Thompson's quotation was also objected to as she had been expelled from the Reich in 1934 after writing unflattering accounts of Hitler. James J. Barnes and Patience P. Barnes Hitler's Mein Kampf in Britain and America: A Publishing History 1930–39; Cambridge University Press 1980 PROVENANCE: From the collection of Susan Mary Patten Alsop a popular historian and a pillar of Washington society was the daughter of a diplomat a descendant of founding father John Jay and served with her first husband Bill Patten at the American Embassy in Paris in the 1950s. When her husband died in 1960 she married Joseph Alsop the journalist the following year. In the 1970s she embarked on her own literary career producing "To Marietta From Paris: 1945-1960" 1974 followed by "Lady Sackville: A Biography" 1978 "Yankees at the Court: The First Americans in Paris" 1982 and "The Congress Dances: Vienna 1814-1815" 1984. Her Georgetown homes both with and without Alsop hosted dignitaries publishers and a variety of interesting people during the 1960s and 1970s including such luminaries as John F. Kennedy Phil Graham Katharine Graham and Isaiah Berlin earning her the nickname "the grand dame of Washington society" to which she rather objected. . 1933. Houghton Mifflin hardcover
réf. 0092-25Wien NSDAP Gaupropagandaamt 1939. 26 x 44 5 cm. Gefalt. In gutem Zustand. 1939réf. 222j3127Berlin Germany: M. Muller & Sohn K.G. Good No dust jacket as issued. First English Edition. Pamphlet. "Members of the Reichstag! When six years ago on this evening tens of thousands of National Socialist fighters marched through the Brandenburg Gate to the light of their torches to express to me their feeling of overwhelming joy and their vows as faithful followers countless anxious eyes all over Germany gazed upon the the beginning of a development the end of which still seemed unknown and unpredictable. I received only a little over a third of all votes cast. The other twenty million were scattered among about 35 other parties. The only thing that united them was their common hatred of our young movement. This united the priests of the Centre Party and Communist atheists the Socialists out to abolish private property capitalists and conservatives. During the long battle of National Socialism for the leadership of the country they had all come together in defence of their interests and had made common cause with Jewry. The complete picture of the extent of the collapse in that period is gradually fading away. It seemed that only a miracle could save Germany. To the Jews and the other enemies of the State however it appeared to be the last flicker of the national power of resistance. They felt that when it had disappeared then they would be able to destroy not only Germany but all Europe as well." - paraphrased from pages 3-4. "During the time of my struggle for power it was in the first instance the Jewish race which only received my prophecies with laughter when I said that I would one day take over the leadership of the State and that I would then among other things settle the Jewish problem. Today I will once more be a prophet: If the international Jewish financiers in and outside Europe should succeed in plunging the nations once more into a world war then the result will not be the bolshevization of the earth and thus the victory of Jewry but the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe!" - page 42. Text in English. 54 stapled pages. Binding tight. Moderate tanning to contents and covers. Numerous light pencil markings and thoughtful marginalia throughout. Discrete clear tape repairs to covers. A sound vintage example of this historic speech in which some argue Hitler presaged the Holocaust.; 8vo . 1939. M. Muller & Sohn K.G. unknown

This copy belonged originally to the prisoners' library 'Lagerbucherei' at Dachau. Now almost forgotten this unlikely library was installed in Barracks 10 along with the infirmary and a sort of canteen. It was conceived as early as October 1933 by an imprisoned publisher Heinrich Bergmann who somehow obtained permission from the commandant Theodor Eicke to set up a lending-library for 'privileged' prisoners. For his part Eicke supplied some books predictable Nazi fare including presumably the present volume. To these were added some tractates and Jesuit relations seconded from a nearby Roman Catholic library and later literature history geography polonica &c from various sources. Perhaps the library appealed to Eicke's sense of Dachau as a 'model' camp or perhaps it was just a bit of practical penology controlling the many by meting out 'privileges' to the few. In any case the prisoners' library became a center of subversive activity within the camp particularly under its later librarians Kurt Schumacher and Viktor Matejka and by 1945 the library held some 15000 volumes: Some of these were carted off into the old town of Dachau where a former prisoner named Albert Zeitler set up a small lending-library in Augsburgerstrasse and the rest were simply scattered among surviving prisoners or mostly lost. Today these books are so rare on the market that the leading historian of concentration-camp libraries has never heard of one. Munich: Verlag Franz Eher Nachfolger GmbH, 1933 hardcover
