Second American edition of My Battle Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler in the publisher’s scarce and controversial dust jacket. This autobiographical manifesto by Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler describes the process by which Hitler became anti-Semitic and outlines his political ideology and future plans for Germany. Hitler began writing Mein Kampf while imprisoned following his failed Putsch in Munich in November 1923. Eventually Hitler realized it would have to be a two-volume work; the first volume was published in 1925 and the second in 1926. After slow initial sales the book became a bestseller in Germany following Hitler's rise to power in 1933. E. T. S. Dugdale began writing an English abridgment of the two volume German edition of Mein Kampf in 1931 but finding a publisher proved difficult. Houghton Mifflin secured the rights to the Dugdale abridgment on July 29 1933. The first print run of only 7603 copies priced at $3.00 met with moderate commercial success but elicited condemnation from Jewish American groups across the United States. Houghton Mifflin decided to risk a second edition only 3497 copies with a retail price of $2.50 and a new dust jacket design which resulted in a diplomatic protest from the German government demanding that it be replaced with an approved design from the German publisher Eher Verlag but Houghton Mifflin refused. The dustjacket for the second edition had panels of black red and yellow and a quotation from Dorothy Thompson. The Nazi government objected to the black-red-yellow color scheme which was emblematic of the liberal German revolutions of 1848–49 and the Weimar Republic while the Nazis had returned to the black white red emblems of the German Empire. Thompson's quotation was also objected to as she had been expelled from the Reich in 1934 after writing unflattering accounts of Hitler. James J. Barnes and Patience P. Barnes Hitler's Mein Kampf in Britain and America: A Publishing History 1930–39; Cambridge University Press 1980 PROVENANCE: From the collection of Susan Mary Patten Alsop a popular historian and a pillar of Washington society was the daughter of a diplomat a descendant of founding father John Jay and served with her first husband Bill Patten at the American Embassy in Paris in the 1950s. When her husband died in 1960 she married Joseph Alsop the journalist the following year. In the 1970s she embarked on her own literary career producing "To Marietta From Paris: 1945-1960" 1974 followed by "Lady Sackville: A Biography" 1978 "Yankees at the Court: The First Americans in Paris" 1982 and "The Congress Dances: Vienna 1814-1815" 1984. Her Georgetown homes both with and without Alsop hosted dignitaries publishers and a variety of interesting people during the 1960s and 1970s including such luminaries as John F. Kennedy Phil Graham Katharine Graham and Isaiah Berlin earning her the nickname "the grand dame of Washington society" to which she rather objected. . 1933. Houghton Mifflin hardcover

1945rif. 199841945. Official U.S. Army map documenting the military geography of the Obersalzberg Adolf Hitler's Bavarian headquarters and one of the principal leadership centers of the Third Reich during the final weeks of World War II. The map identifies the Berghof SS barracks the residences of Martin Bormann and Hermann Göring roads toward Mount Kehlstein and the Kehlsteinhaus and other features within the restricted Nazi compound. It provides a contemporary record of how American forces mapped and navigated this highly fortified and symbolically important enemy landscape at the moment of its destruction and occupation. Official U.S. Army Map of the Obersalzberg Nazi Compound. U.S. Army 1945. Single-sheet map measuring 8 x 11¾ inches. By the war's end the Obersalzberg had developed into a cordoned-off Nazi leadership enclave centered on Hitler's Berghof with residences barracks administrative facilities and security installations serving senior members of the regime and SS personnel. The map's schematic and somewhat imperfect geography suggests a practical military purpose rather than a postwar survey providing U.S. personnel with navigational guidance through terrain that had not yet been fully documented on the ground. Its 1945 date places the map directly within the destruction and Allied occupation of the Obersalzberg. RAF Bomber Command attacked the compound on April 25 1945 and American forces entered the area in early May discovering and occupying the remains of one of Nazi Germany's most politically charged command centers. Typical fold creases from field handling; upper corners clipped possibly from mounting or pinning; light stain at lower left; edge wear; tear at lower right not affecting the map image. Overall very good. A scarce contemporary U.S. military document recording the physical organization of Hitler's Obersalzberg headquarters and the practical geography confronting American forces as they entered and occupied the Nazi leadership complex in the final days of the war. unknown

Frontis photo portrait.24 illus. Original publisher's black cloth lettered gilt on spine and on front cover gilt eagle and swastika. Published in October 1933 the same month as the first impression. With the striking typoggraphic bookplate of film director Alexander Korda on the front pastedown. There is a strong adversarial connection between the Hungarian-born British film director and producer Alexander Korda and Adolf Hitler. Korda was a key figure in British anti-Nazi propaganda and as a Jewish immigrant and friend of Winston Churchill he actively worked against the Nazi regime.Ê The main connections are:ÊThe Idea for The Great Dictator: Korda was the first person to suggest to Charlie Chaplin that he should make a film exploiting his physical similarity to Hitler. Korda suggested this as early as 1937Ã1938. Anti-Nazi Propaganda Agent: Korda was close friends with Winston Churchill and used his film studio London Films as a front to help British intelligence spy on Nazi Germany. He produced films aimed at defying Hitler such as The Lion Has Wings 1939 and That Hamilton Woman 1941. Korda was also a target of Nazi Fury: Because of his work and his Jewish heritage Korda was considered an enemy by the Nazis. Slight rubbing else very good. Hurst And Blackett,, hardcover

1937rif. 374289Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1937. Second American Edition. 297pp. frontispiece. 1 vols. 8vo. Light brown cloth with title printed in red on front cover and spine. Fine in publisher's lightly chipped dust jacket with minor wear. Second American Edition. 297pp. frontispiece. 1 vols. 8vo. A scarce second American edition of Hitler's autobiography and political manifesto in one of the best examples we've seen of the rare dust jacket that elicited an official protest from the German government. Despite condemnation of its first American edition from Jewish American groups Houghton Mifflin risked the publication of a second edition lowering the retail price from $3.00 to $2.50 and issuing a newly designed dust jacket. The dust jacket is illustrated with the color scheme of the Weimar Republic and includes a provocative quote from journalist Dorothy Thompson. The design drew a swift formal protest from the German government who demanded that it be replaced by a dust jacket approved by the original German publisher Eher Verlag. Houghton Mifflin refused the request. American journalist and radio broadcaster Dorothy Thompson was the first American journalist expelled from Nazi Germany in 1934 for her depcition of Hitler in her book I Saw Hitler! 1932 Farrar and Rinehart. Her expulsion order was hand delivered by a Gestapo agent and gave her 24 hours to leave the country. Her quote on the back of the dust jacket reads in part: "As a liberal democrat I deprecate every idea in this book. But it is not the function of liberals and democrats to live in a world of illusions." In 1939 Reynal & Hitchcock published the unabridged edition but by then the rest of the world was already at war. Houghton Mifflin unknown
