1933rif. C104435London: Hurst And Blackett 1933. First Edition. Second Impression.hardback. Hardcover Hardcover. Fine. First Edition. Second Impression.hardback. 8vo. pp 285. Frontis photo portrait.24 illus. Original publisher's black cloth lettered gilt on spine and on front cover gilt eagle and swastika. Published in October 1933 the same month as the first impression. With the striking typoggraphic bookplate of film director Alexander Korda on the front pastedown. There is a strong adversarial connection between the Hungarian-born British film director and producer Alexander Korda and Adolf Hitler. Korda was a key figure in British anti-Nazi propaganda and as a Jewish immigrant and friend of Winston Churchill he actively worked against the Nazi regime.Ê The main connections are:ÊThe Idea for The Great Dictator: Korda was the first person to suggest to Charlie Chaplin that he should make a film exploiting his physical similarity to Hitler. Korda suggested this as early as 1937Ã1938. Anti-Nazi Propaganda Agent: Korda was close friends with Winston Churchill and used his film studio London Films as a front to help British intelligence spy on Nazi Germany. He produced films aimed at defying Hitler such as The Lion Has Wings 1939 and That Hamilton Woman 1941. Korda was also a target of Nazi Fury: Because of his work and his Jewish heritage Korda was considered an enemy by the Nazis. Slight rubbing else very good. Hurst And Blackett,, hardcover

This copy belonged originally to the prisoners' library 'Lagerbucherei' at Dachau. Now almost forgotten this unlikely library was installed in Barracks 10 along with the infirmary and a sort of canteen. It was conceived as early as October 1933 by an imprisoned publisher Heinrich Bergmann who somehow obtained permission from the commandant Theodor Eicke to set up a lending-library for 'privileged' prisoners. For his part Eicke supplied some books predictable Nazi fare including presumably the present volume. To these were added some tractates and Jesuit relations seconded from a nearby Roman Catholic library and later literature history geography polonica &c from various sources. Perhaps the library appealed to Eicke's sense of Dachau as a 'model' camp or perhaps it was just a bit of practical penology controlling the many by meting out 'privileges' to the few. In any case the prisoners' library became a center of subversive activity within the camp particularly under its later librarians Kurt Schumacher and Viktor Matejka and by 1945 the library held some 15000 volumes: Some of these were carted off into the old town of Dachau where a former prisoner named Albert Zeitler set up a small lending-library in Augsburgerstrasse and the rest were simply scattered among surviving prisoners or mostly lost. Today these books are so rare on the market that the leading historian of concentration-camp libraries has never heard of one. Munich: Verlag Franz Eher Nachfolger GmbH, 1933 hardcover

1935rif. 4838Germany 1935 1935. A collection of 195 photographs and 5 reproductions of paintings and drawings by Adolf Hitler. The photographs are all from number 15 of the Sammelwerk "Cigarette cards" issued as Adolf Hitler propaganda in 1935. The larger photographs measure 170x120mm and the smaller one 120x80mm. They have been tipped into a notebook 208x150mm which was "borrowed" from the first owner's place of work as it has on the front cover the name of the company - Wehrle-Werk A.G. - which still exists. As the images are tipped in it means that the captions and information on the back can be read. A few of the photographs are torn at the edges but overall they are in very good condition. These photographs are not particularly uncommon but they are usually found loose and so it is rare to find then put together in this rather tidy organised way. On the inside cover is inscribed "J.L.Lindsell Schleswigland 1945". The name sounds English and perhaps it was seized by an invading soldier towards the end of the war. The original owner clearly lavished a lot of time on this album. There is a typed label on the front cover and then some of the early photographs have typed captions underneath them. An interesting collection. Germany 1935 hardcover
1939rif. 51928Hutchinson in association with Hurst & Blackett 1939. 18 parts sm. 4to. First Edition thus with very numerous photographs many full-page in the text; original pictorial wrappers printed in colours wire-stitched as issued a bright clean set now preserved in a custom-made burgundy buckram solander case with gilt back. COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST UNEXPURGATED ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF HITLER'S INFAMOUS TREATISE. Translated by James Murphy it is also the first fully illustrated version in English with many photographs illustrations advertisements and examples of British war propaganda throughout. The printing style of covers varies due to production costs; parts 1-7 are printed in red yellow and black; parts 8-18 in red and black only. The publisher's blurb on front covers is hardly understated: 'the blue-print of German imperialism'; 'the most widely discussed book of the modern world'. It is ironic that the next statement is 'Royalties on all sales will go the British Red Cross Society'. During publication purchasers could choose from five different binding cases: 'when this work is complete you will say 'what a fine edition!' No case is present here but we have had the set preserved for the future in a handsome specially commissioned burgundy buckram solander case. COMPLETE SETS IN THE ORIGINAL PARTS ARE VERY SCARCE.
