1945ref. 21133441945. London: The East London Printing Co EC3. 1945. Oblong 12mo bifolium; silver and black borders; pp. 4; light creasing and wear to extremities; nonetheless well preserved.A very rare satirical mourning card 'in horrible memory of Adolf Hitler'. Although the card appears at first glance to be a traditional memorial card decorated with a cross and flowers when opened it celebrates the death of Adolf Hitler d. 30 April 1945 'killed by playing with his own intuition! May he rip until he busts'. The cross and flowers design - and the interior layout - had previously been employed by the East London Printing Co. to mourn inter alia the Unknown Warrior victims of the Titanic John 'Jack' Cornwell killed at the Battle of Jutland at the age of sixteen and those who lost their lives in the 1929 crash of Airship R101. Here a woodcut portrait of an anxious-looking Hitler his hair in disarray faces a mock epitaph ending 'Now the Fuehrer lays cremated Deep in Hell . right near the Grate!'. 1937ref. 374289Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1937. Second American Edition. 297pp. frontispiece. 1 vols. 8vo. Light brown cloth with title printed in red on front cover and spine. Fine in publisher's lightly chipped dust jacket with minor wear. Second American Edition. 297pp. frontispiece. 1 vols. 8vo. A scarce second American edition of Hitler's autobiography and political manifesto in one of the best examples we've seen of the rare dust jacket that elicited an official protest from the German government. Despite condemnation of its first American edition from Jewish American groups Houghton Mifflin risked the publication of a second edition lowering the retail price from $3.00 to $2.50 and issuing a newly designed dust jacket. The dust jacket is illustrated with the color scheme of the Weimar Republic and includes a provocative quote from journalist Dorothy Thompson. The design drew a swift formal protest from the German government who demanded that it be replaced by a dust jacket approved by the original German publisher Eher Verlag. Houghton Mifflin refused the request. American journalist and radio broadcaster Dorothy Thompson was the first American journalist expelled from Nazi Germany in 1934 for her depcition of Hitler in her book I Saw Hitler! 1932 Farrar and Rinehart. Her expulsion order was hand delivered by a Gestapo agent and gave her 24 hours to leave the country. Her quote on the back of the dust jacket reads in part: "As a liberal democrat I deprecate every idea in this book. But it is not the function of liberals and democrats to live in a world of illusions." In 1939 Reynal & Hitchcock published the unabridged edition but by then the rest of the world was already at war. Houghton Mifflin unknown

First Edition thus with very numerous photographs many full-page in the text; original pictorial wrappers printed in colours wire-stitched as issued a bright clean set now preserved in a custom-made burgundy buckram solander case with gilt back. COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST UNEXPURGATED ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF HITLER'S INFAMOUS TREATISE. The publisher's blurb on front covers is hardly understated: 'the blue-print of German imperialism'; 'the most widely discussed book of the modern world'. It is ironic that the next statement is 'Royalties on all sales will go the British Red Cross Society'. During publication purchasers could choose from five different binding cases: 'when this work is complete you will say 'what a fine edition!' No case is present here but we have had the set preserved for the future in a handsome specially commissioned burgundy buckram solander case. COMPLETE SETS IN THE ORIGINAL PARTS ARE VERY SCARCE.
