1944réf. 307866Government Printing Office 1944. Fred Cooper. Poster. Color lithograph. Measures 27 3/4" x 19 7/8" This original World War II-era poster was part of an anti-inflation campaign initiated by the Office of Price Administration designed to encourage American citizens to support the war effort. During the previous world war the US experienced an inflation rate of 62%. When WWII began President Roosevelt established the OPA to prevent price-gouging and unfair access to consumer goods. The effort was considered successful with inflation between 1940 and 1944 rising only 28%. The woman wears a red and white striped blouse contrasted against a blue background with stars evoking the American flag. Her hair is coiffed and she wears makeup as well as a white ruffled apron over her blouse. In this way the poster demonstrates how women could contribute to the war effort without sacrificing their femininity a somewhat mixed signal that speaks to cultural dynamics in the United States in the 1940s. A smaller graphic overlays the poster reading "Produce and Conserve / Share and Play Square / Food Fights for Freedom." In very good condition with some wear to margins and along original fold lines. A closed tear to left margin has been professionally repaired. Some cracks and chips to lower margin. The poster is otherwise clean and vibrant. Government Printing Office unknown

1982réf. 717Ames Research Center 1982. Hardcover. Fine. Red cloth binding with gilt titles to the spine. Quarto 11 x 9" The Controlled Ecological Life Support System CELSS program ran for about 25 years between the late 1970s and early 2000s with related work continuing today. The goal of CELSS was to create an enclosed biological system that could sustain astronauts indefinitely. It relied especially on plants which recycle waste into food and oxygen. Kennedy Space Center spent decades developing indoor farming techniques for crops and even fish to support a closed-loop life-support system for space travel. Eleven bound research reports from NASA contractors include: Emmett J. Johnson: Genetic engineering Possibilities for CELSS: A Bibliography and Summary of Techniques. March 1982 G. M. Hornberger and E. B. Rastetter: Sensitivity Analysis as an Aid in Modeling and Control of Poorly Defined Ecological Systems 1982 T. W. Tibbitts and D. K. Alford: Controlled Ecological Life Support System: The Use of Higher Plants 1982 R. M. Mason and J. L. Carden: CELSS:Research and Development Guidelines for CELSS 1982 B. Moore and R. D. Hoff; Plant Diversity to Support Humans in a CELSS Ground Based Demonstrator 1982 It is likely that this research was considered in the fascinating and controversial vivarium experiment: Biosphere 2 in Oracle Arizona. Constructed between 1987 and 1991 Biosphere 2 was an experiment on the viability of closed ecological systems to support and maintain human life in outer space as a substitute for Earth's biosphere. The largest ever created it was a two-year closure 1991- 1993 with a crew of eight people and was only used once more in 1994 for its original intended purposes. Both attempts ran into problems including low amounts of food and oxygen die-offs of many animals and plants and group dynamic tensions. . Ames Research Center hardcover
