1999Light bump to bottom of spine. ; 9.5 x 1.25 x 6.5 Inches; 272 pages; Studies of Roman politics have traditionally emphasized individual personalities or groups of personalities and have explained political behavior in terms of contests for individual power or group power. By contrast, Roberta Stewart focuses on being the religious institution of the "allotment" of duties among elected officials as a primary control on Roman politics. She examines in detail the procedure of allotment, the roles of popular election and allotment in defining public authority and duty, and the relationship between the Roman Senate and elected officials. Allotment is seen to reflect Republican ideology about the divine sanction of Roman leadership, military enterprise, and empire. Allotment is examined in particular historical contexts, and the successive formations of public office in 444, 367, and 242 b. C. E. Are analyzed as a series of political solutions in an evolving cultural context. The discussion documents the ritual definition of allotments and the historical development of distinctive features of Republican political office: the equal authority of colleagues (collegiality) , the individual authority and accountability for an allotted function (provincia) , the procedural alternative to allotment (comparatio) , and the hierarchy of offices with imperium (the consuls and praetors). Public Office in Early Rome will be of great interest for scholars and students of Roman religion, government, and history. Roberta Stewart is Associate Professor of Classics, Dartmouth College.

Hardcover. lacking the original dust jacket but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing American Guide Series Series B&W photographs maps This "Completely Revised Second Edition" of the WPA Guide to L.A. originally published in 1941 is like all the books in the American Guide series a comprehensive and thoroughly readable guide to its subject. Sure it's now almost 75 years "out of date" but as in most cities a lot of the history is still visible if you know how to look for it -- and these old books can still be helpful. Plus they're just fun. After some introductory matter listings of hotels night clubs annual events etc. the bulk of the book is divided into three sections: "Los Angeles: A General Survey"; "Los Angeles Points of Interest"; and "Neighboring Cities." The "General Survey" section has chapters devoted to education religion the movies radio the arts and my favorite "The Business of Pleasure." The neighboring cities that are given their own chapters this book being about the "environs" as well as the city proper are: Beverly Hills Glendale San Pedro & Wilmington Hollywood Long Beach & Signal Hill Pasadena and Santa Monica. And following all this -- an inevitable feature of the WPA American Guides -- are seven different auto tours plus three sub-tours to take in and around the city some extending as far out as Palm Springs.
