1784réf. 11036Vienna: Auf Kosten der Korrespondenz Expedition 1784. First Edition. Full contemporary calf. Fine. 8vo 4 5 - 156 2 - errata pp. 4 large engraved folding plates. A landmark monograph and historical turning point in the design construction and management of large municipal hospitals. Fauken was charged with the design of the Allgemeines Krankenhaus in Vienna. It was in fact a renovation of the extensive building complex of the almshouse for soldiers and the poor already extant from the late 17th century. The building was a Baroque masterpiece originally conceived and designed by Prince Karl-Eusebius von Lichtenstein. There were long galleries with many windows and the basic building was well suited to its new role as a medical establishment for a large city where patients could actually be cured. At the outset Joseph II regarded his new hospital as a teaching institution and insisted on the most up-to-date scientific principles in its organization and maintenance. The old galleries of the almshouse were subdivided corridors eliminated and the spaces then re-organized to accommodate single patients by wards. The new hospital was organized as if it were five independent hospitals and the only new structures added to the complex were the asylum and maternity ward. This separation permitted better care and purposeful planning of the facility. There was generous cross ventilation and light and strict adherence to rigorous standards of sanitation and patient care. Assorted charitable foundations were amalgamated or dissolved to provide general and ongoing funding for the institution. Fauken addresses all these issues in the book offered here as well as making an argument for the sound economic sense of good healthcare for the populace. 1944réf. 307866Government Printing Office 1944. Fred Cooper. Poster. Color lithograph. Measures 27 3/4" x 19 7/8" This original World War II-era poster was part of an anti-inflation campaign initiated by the Office of Price Administration designed to encourage American citizens to support the war effort. During the previous world war the US experienced an inflation rate of 62%. When WWII began President Roosevelt established the OPA to prevent price-gouging and unfair access to consumer goods. The effort was considered successful with inflation between 1940 and 1944 rising only 28%. The woman wears a red and white striped blouse contrasted against a blue background with stars evoking the American flag. Her hair is coiffed and she wears makeup as well as a white ruffled apron over her blouse. In this way the poster demonstrates how women could contribute to the war effort without sacrificing their femininity a somewhat mixed signal that speaks to cultural dynamics in the United States in the 1940s. A smaller graphic overlays the poster reading "Produce and Conserve / Share and Play Square / Food Fights for Freedom." In very good condition with some wear to margins and along original fold lines. A closed tear to left margin has been professionally repaired. Some cracks and chips to lower margin. The poster is otherwise clean and vibrant. Government Printing Office unknown books

1936réf. Cat333N.p.: International News Photos 1936. Press photograph 8 x 10 inches by Arthur Rothstein distributed by International News Photos with original caption on verso dated 1936. Minor edge wear and toning to caption else very good. In the mid-1930s prolonged drought across the Great Plains combined with falling agricultural prices forced thousands of farm families into foreclosure and displacement. The crisis central to what would become known as the Dust Bowl led to widespread liquidation of farms and personal property often through public auctions held under distress conditions. Offered here is a stark press image documenting one such sale in Nebraska. The original caption reads in part: "This farm auction shop is typical of the mid-west where farmers driven from their land by the drought are forced to sell at auction their farm machinery household effects in order to procure enough money to move to more fertile spots. The government is aiding the stricken farmers through loans and relief. It is thought that not less than 100000 families may be moved from their farms by the government." The photograph shows the exterior of a "Sale Room" with equipment and household goods assembled for liquidation. Rothstein working for the Resettlement Administration produced some of the most widely circulated images of rural dislocation during the Depression. Images such as this were distributed through press agencies to illustrate both the severity of the crisis and the federal government's expanding role in relief and resettlement and were reprinted later. This is an attractive original copy with fine contrast with 1936 press markings verso. International News Photos unknown books

1845réf. List3743Cincinnati Ohio 1845. Autograph letter signed "F. G. Macy" 4 pp. 8 x 10 inches on a folded sheet addressed to his brother John B. Macy. Excellent. A letter bluntly discussing Democratic Party factionalism written scarcely three months after the inauguration of James K. Polk and less than four months before the annexation of Texas formally took effect. The recipient John B. Macy would represent Wisconsin in Congress from 1853 to 1855 before perishing in the burning of the steamer Niagara on Lake Michigan in 1857. At the time of this correspondence he appears to have been embroiled in a political controversy connected to Treasury Secretary Robert J. Walker and the Democratic press. After briefly reporting the death of a relative's child Francis G. Macy turns to national politics commenting on newspaper attacks directed against his brother and expressing frustration with Cincinnati editor John Brough then one of the most influential Democratic journalists in Ohio. The letter captures the bitterness that remained after the Democratic nomination struggle of 1844 when supporters of Martin Van Buren and James K. Polk battled for control of the party: "You perceive I suppose the continual attacks the Inquirer makes on you; this morning it is out on you & Drinker as well as upon Lake. It appears Brough is determined to prostrate you if possible. He has drawn out Father Ritchie in defence of Mr. Walker but demands of Walker or the President to dismiss you immediately. My opinion is that no notice should be taken of his Billingsgate trash but let him go on till Drinker gets his paper underway." Macy believed the attacks stemmed not from policy disagreements but from lingering resentment over the defeat of Martin Van Buren's presidential ambitions and the rise of Polk under the influence of Treasury Secretary Robert J. Walker: "It appears that Brough is determined to put down the Statesman & all other papers that give their support to the present Secretary of the Treasury but I am mistaken in Mr. Walker if he can be influenced by Brough or made to succumb to him & his faction. . Of one thing you may rest assured Brough will never forgive Mr. Walker for defeating Mr. Van Buren & placing Mr. Polk in power for he looks upon the Secretary as the life of the party who was determined that Mr. Van Buren should not again be President & however much he may laud Mr Polk it is only that he may inflict more fatally the wound which he hopes will ruin Mr. Walker." Macy was a self-described "uncompromising whig" but though he was disappointed by the election results he did report grudging admiration for the victors. Referring to Walker's role in securing Polk's nomination and election he observes: "Now I should have felt under many obligations to Mr. Walker if he had killed off both Van & Polk for then good honest Whigs would have once more been in power & Mr. Clay triumphant but as he did not do that good deed and offered us fair fight & manfully vanquished us we submit with as good a grace as possible & wait our time to try it again. . At the same time we hope the Government will be so conducted as to reflect nothing but honour on our Country & I have no hesitation in saying that in relation to Annexation & the conduct of Mr. Polk up to this time & the means he is adopting to secure the peace of the Country meets with the hearty approbation of one uncompromising whig at least." An engaging political letter linking the Polk administration the Texas annexation crisis Democratic Party factionalism and future Wisconsin congressman John B. Macy whose political status made him one of the most famous of the Steamer Niagara victims. books
