This volume was among several dozen books from Temple Rice Hollcroft's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his ink stamp signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this volume does not have those signs of his ownership. But please check our inventory for several others that do. The American mathematician Temple Rice Hollcroft 1889 - 1967 received B.S. in 1912 and A.B. in 1914 from Hanover College and then A.M. in 1915 from the University of Kentucky. He received his Ph.D. in 1917 from Cornell University under Virgil Snyder. Hollcroft was a mathematics professor at Wells College from 1918 to 1954 from which he retired as professor emeritus. Hollcroft served for 14 years as Associate Secretary of the American Mathematical Society. In 1932 in Zurich he was an Invited Speaker of the International Congress of Mathematician ICM. His subject was THE GENERAL WEB OF SURFACES AND THE SPACE INVOLUTION DEFINED BY IT . Being invited to talk at the ICM has been called "the equivalent of induction to a hall of fame." - from Wikipedia. Softcover stapled wraps. Good condition. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 1948réf. 101406New York January 15 1948. 1948. Very good. - Over 65 words typed on his personal 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide stationery. Thanking the educator Harold Rugg for his note "I was particularly impressed by the fact that you include me as one who comes within the category of 'distinguished speakers.'" He goes on to offer to lecture to Rugg's group "I should love to come to talk to your group on some phase of the European economic picture." offering possible dates. Signed "Lubin". Dr. Rugg has annotated the letter in pencil at the bottom "Give Houston Peterson the dates of our Easter vacation if it does not coincide with Rutgers perhaps he can speak to our group in the spring." Folded for mailing with creases and a paper clip stain to the top left corner. Very good. Together with a retained copy of Harold Rugg's reply dated January 22 1948 stating that he's set aside February 18th one of the dates Lubin suggested and asking if he could send him a title of his talk. The head of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics from 1933 to 1946 Isador Lubin 1896-1978 was appointed by FDR's Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins. He had previously been an instructor at the Institute of Economics with became part of the Brookings Institution and published his book "Miners' Wages and the Coast of Coal" as his dissertation. Before joining FDR's New Deal staff Lubin had served as advisor to Senator Robert M. La Follette Jr. pioneering the idea of government responsibility for the national accounts. During Roosevelt's administration Lubin had offices in the West Wing and was a special statistical adviser to the President one of FDR's "brain Trust". He subsequently served as president of the American Statistical Association. One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education Harold Rugg 1886-1960 was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A Civil Engineer he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education. He was responsible for producing the very first series of school textbooks from 1929 until the 1940's. New York, January 15, 1948. unknown
