1864réf. 24837Washington DC: War Department 1864. 12mo. Handbill. Near fine. Four-punched at left edge not affecting text. Titled "Exchange of Prisoners of War" this General Order consists of Townsend's report of a prisoner exchange arranged between Generals William T. Sherman and John Bell Hood that took place in Rough and Ready Georgia on September 19 22 28 and 30 1864. "United States prisoners received -- 146 commissioned officers. 212 non-commissioned officers. 770 privates. In all equivalent to 2047 privates. Confederate prisoners received -- 128 commissioned officers. 225 non-commissioned officers. 979 privates. In all equivalent to 2045 privates." How these numbers add up to 2047 and 2045 privates is beyond us -- must be the Old Math. Accompanied by a fine modern circa 1960 glossy 8" X 10" photograph a superbly done reprint of the well-known head-and-shoulders portrait of John Bell Hood in Confederate uniform. Verso bears red inkstamped "From the / Abraham Lincoln Book Shop / Collection." A superb pair. War Department unknown
réf. 24912Washington DC: War Department 1864 December 2. 12mo. Handbill. Very good. Four-punched at left edge not affecting text. Townsend announces the Secretary of War's appointment of Major General Grenville M. Dodge "to the command of the Department of Missouri" and of Major General William S. Rosecrans "being relieved" of same and ordered to "repair to Cincinnati Ohio" to await further orders -- which never came. Very attractive. General appointed -- general relieved! unknown
1830réf. 1947521830 . Keeping things ship-shape on an anti-slaving cruise Meticulously prepared manuscript aide-memoir of General Duties on-board the brig-sloop Sparrowhawk 18 on anti-slaving duties in the Caribbean. Organised in the first section by the days of the week and in the second by reference to the responsible officers. Each section signed off at the conclusion by Mayne. Mayne entered the Navy in 1812 as a First Class Volunteer on board Ville de Paris at Portsmouth. In 1813 he sailed in the Doris 36 Capt. Robert O'Brien as part of a large convoy for the East Indies and China and took part in the blockading of several American merchantmen at Whampoa. In 1816 with the Trent he took part in "the bombardment of Algiers where a slight wound in the foot and a severe one in the thigh procured him a grant from the Patriotic Fund and a pension which lasted until his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Mr. Mayne proceeded with the flag of Sir David Milne to North America" O'Byrne. Commissioned lieutenant in 1821 he served on the North America and West Indies Station in the mid-1820s on Druid and Barham "in the former of which ships we find him escorting General Bolivar and suite from La Guiara to Carthagena". On 14 Aug. 1829 he was promoted to the command of the Icarus 10 also in the West Indies; where on 22 July 1830 he was transferred to that of the Sparrowhawk 18 - ordered 1806 built Brightlingsea launched Chatham 1807 paid off 1841. During this period the ship was on anti-slaving duties in the Caribbean; April 1830 detained the Spanish schooner Santiago with 144 slaves who were carried to Havana on HMS Slaney the Spanish vessel being abandoned as in "a sinking state". Mayne was nominated 28 Oct. 1831 Acting-Captain of the Magnificent receiving-ship at Port Royal Jamaica "in which he continued until Feb. 1832 when she was reduced to a Lieutenant's command". In his later career Mayne was employed as Inspecting commander of the Coast Guard at Sheerness Hastings and Brighton from 1834-7 and on the north coast of Ireland and again at Hastings from 2 May 1839 until Feb. 1840. An unusual document from an interesting context.
