Best.-Nr. 7481Undated circa 1837. 'London W. Spooner 377 Strand'. Dimensions of print roughly 17.5 x 13.5 cm. On original grey paper windowpane mount 28 x 23 cm. Engraved label 2.5 x 11 cm beneath the print with a couple of remarque-style illustrations. The print itself is good although a little aged and spotted; the margins and mount being rather more heavily affected. Attractive and unusual item the image changing when held up to the light. Two soldiers are shown dwarfed by the high ceiling of the chapel which is decked with brightly-coloured flags. When held to the light the chapel is filled with the mourning congregation. Scarce. There is no reference to this particular Spooner print on the net. The dioramic print was introduced to England in 1821 by the French photographer Joseph Daguerre. Spooner published at least thirty-seven of his 'Protean Views'. Undated [circa 1837]. 'London W. Spooner 377 Strand'. unknown

Best.-Nr. 12783Ordered by The House of Commons to be Printed 25 June 1866. 28 1 pp. 8vo. In fair condition on aged and lightly-worn paper. P. 1 has the drophead title: 'STRAND UNION WORKHOUSE. RETURN to an Order of the Honourable The House of Commons dated 25 June 1866; - for COPY "of the REPORT made by R. B. Crane Esquire Poor Law Inspector to the Poor Law Board after an Inquiry held by him on the 4th and 6th June 1866 into certain Allegations made by Matilda Beeton in reference to the Treatment of the Sick in the Strand Union Workhouse." Poor Law Board 25 June 1866. ENFIELD Secretary.' Beeton was an early whistleblower: she had previously described the appalling conditions at the Rotherhithe Workhouse Infirmary. Among her charges in this case are 'The Theft and Sale of Beer &c. by the Patients and Nurses and the Sale of Milk by one class of Inmates to another' and 'The Badness of the Washing the Drunkenness of the Washerwomen and the Defective Supply of Linen for the Sick'. 'Several cases of a very distressing character are described in the evidence' and among Cane's conclusions after a detailed enquiry are that 'Want of space and of proper accommodation for the sick and want of good nursing and of efficient attendance are now the urgent requisites of this establishment. . There may be reasons why the guardians should feel embarrassed and hesitate to carry out their resolution to build a new workhouse; but there are no reasons that I am aware of which prevent them from at once appointing a sufficient staff of efficient nurses and attendants upon the sick.' Scarce: no copy of the actual document as opposed to 'Electronic Resources' to be found on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. For an outline of the affair see Ruth G. Hodgkinson's 'The Origins of the National Health Service' 1967 pp.492-3. Ordered, by The House of Commons, to be Printed, 25 June 1866. unknown

1967Best.-Nr. 12774Middletown CT: Wesleyan University Press 1967. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Squarish octavo 77pp. A crisp clean copy near fine in the publisher's grey cloth just a touch shaken and with the spine a tinge cocked. In a very good dust jacket with some light rubbing along the extremities. A presentation copy with a pleasing association SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Justice to fellow poet Mark Strand and his then-wife Antonia in the year of publication: "This copy is for Mark & Antonia who kept the light on. Don Justice March 1967." Laid in is a postcard postmarked in August of 1970 from Justice to Strand: "Aug 22. Dear Mark--Went to the horse races Monday decided to apply my new irrational 'system' of betting my age in perfectas & in the very 1st race on which I did so 45 came in paying $269.80 for $2. Today is our 23rd wedding anniversary--fantastic! Perhaps I should switch to betting 23 now. I might as well amuse myself if possible--I don't seem to be able to concentrate on any 'work' here: it's climate & family I think. Love Don." On pp. 40-41 there are some light pencil edits to the poem "The Missing Person" likely in either Justice's or Strand's hand. A meaningful presentation copy with some correspondence that sheds light on Justice's life in the years following the publication of his fourth book of poetry. Wesleyan University Press hardcover
