1959ref. Strike1959BRITISH PRINTERS' STRIKE 1959: The Guardian Journal. Nottingham Strike Edition 8 issues from June 22 thru July 1 1959 including a Joint Post/News issue for June 29th. Folio each 4pp mimeographed. The 1959 printing strike in Nottingham was part of a landmark national dispute where more than 100000 printing workers across the UK went on strike for a 40-hour work week and a 10% wage increase. The strike halted production at thousands of print concerns nationwide. The Nottingham Guardian Journal had to rely on printing small emergency blackout editions to provide limited news coverage during the crisis. After seven weeks of industry-wide disruption the strike ended in August when workers secured an iconic agreement that established a 40-hour workweek. This victory achieved by printers set a major precedent that successfully spread the demand to other manual workers across Great Britain. Guardian Journal paperback
