1780rif. W1890London: Charles Eyre and William Strahan 1780. Title page pp. 691-696. Folio. First edition. Printed on laid paper. Disbound from larger volume. "An Act to allow the exportation of provisions goods wares and merchandize from Great Britain to certain towns ports or places in North America which are or may be under the protection of His Majesty's arms; and from such towns ports or places to Great Britain and other parts of His Majesty's dominions." The effect of this act was to amend the American Prohibitory Act of 1776 to to allow the resumption of trade betwenn Britain and those parts of the American colonies that remained under British control. The Prohibitory Act had been the final straw that led to the American Revoltion but if Parliament thought the 1780 revisions would reverse British fortunes in the colonies they would be disappointed: The Restoration of Trade Act was too little and too late. The document is in very good condition: clean and bright with 4 tiny bookworm holes in bottom margins--well away from the text. First Edition. Paper. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Foolscap folio viii 246 pp. edges uncut; bound in half crimson morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe original printed wrappers bound in at the end. Detailed report of New Zealand affairs from April 1850 to August 1851 providing an overview of this pivotal era in New Zealand history marking a transition from early unstructured settlement toward a more organized Anglican-led colonial identity and the first steps toward self-governance. Governor George Grey was under immense pressure from the Settlers' Constitutional Associations while this period also saw the arrival of the "First Four Ships" in Lyttelton in December 1850 and pressure from the newly formed Canterbury Association to create a "slice of England" in the South Island complete with a structured social hierarchy and a strong Anglican Church presence. Of special interest are reports for the introduction of Maori representation in government and parliament presentations from Queen Victoria to various native chiefs the acquisition of lands by the New Zealand Company and the settlement of pensioner emigrants in New Zealand. . First and final leaves evenly toned; very occasional spots to margin but contents otherwise fresh. A clean copy in a near-fine rebind. The first edition of the landmark report on Wilberforce's first abortive bill to abolish slavery. This book contains an account of Wilberforce's legendary four-hour speech condemning the slave trade. Wilberforce had spoken vigorously against slavery since 1789 and had chaired a select committee on the subject of the trade in 1790 but this debate in 1791 was the first outing in the Commons for his Abolition Bill. As his biographer writes 'On April 18 in a four-hour speech that showed his mastery of the evidence and arguments Wilberforce moved for leave to bring in an Abolition Bill. Subsequent debate was lively and extended over two evenings but when the house voted at 3.30 on the morning of 20 April Wilberforce was defeated by 163 to 88 votes. The outbreak both of revolution in France and early in 1791 of a slave rebellion in the French colony of San Domingo Haiti had heightened insecurities and led the majority of M. P. s to oppose a measure that they perceived as potentially destabilizing.' ODNB. An important document in the history of Abolition. Scarce in commerce. The end of p. 60 ends 'and of such' and 3 page references to Pitt on p.124 conforming with ESTC N24631. London; Printed by and for W. Woodfall, 1791. hardcover

1824rif. 6000004London: George Eyre and Andrew Strahan 1824. Folio pp ii added general title-page for the parliamentary year 737-756; unbound neat paper spine. A crucial landmark in the creation of the Australian Agricultural Company and the first official use of the great company's name. Two months earlier the House of Commons had passed a bill incorporating "The Australian Company of London" which this overrides Ferguson 949. The Australian Agricultural Company or AACo played a huge role in shaping the early Australian economy. From its establishment in 1824 it was responsible for the development and expansion of the Hunter Valley and other regions. Surviving all the rural challenges - including droughts economic depressions and labour shortages - its long-term impact on early Australia was substantial in establishing agriculture as a primary industry and contributing to Australia's economy famously "riding on the sheep's back". AACo continues to be a significant player in today's agricultural sector today as Australia's largest integrated cattle and beef producer owning and operating approximately 7 million hectares of land in Queensland and the Northern Territory. This vast landholding represents roughly 1% of Australia's land mass highlighting the company's substantial presence in the country's agricultural landscape. . George Eyre and Andrew Strahan unknown
