réf. 18911London: Printed by William du-Gard and Henry Hills Printers to His Highness the Lord Protector. MDCLIII 1653. title continued "As it was publickly declared at Westminster the 16. day of December 1653 . . . OLIVER LORD PROTECTOR of the said Common-wealth took a Solemn Oath for observing the same." Wing CD-ROM 1996 G1456F ; Thomason E.10635 Signatures: E2 F-L² chi¹. Issued separately and possibly also as part of a through-paged set. The last leaf bears "The oath taken by His Highness Oliver Cromwel Lord Protector" signed printed: O. Cromwell. Pp.2 21-46 modern rebinding marbled boards title on spine in red and gold quarter leather tract marked and stained throughout mainly title but text clear and complete. The number "26" has been scrawled on the title. Many institutions in UK and USA have copies but I have found no auction or catalogue reference suggesting great scarcity. This view is supported by the instigator Robert Amadeus Baron Heath of a facsimile edition for the Philobiblon Society "Reprinted in fac-simile for Private Circulation 16th May 1867" in an unknown number of copies. In an autograph letter enclosed in my copy he says "I possess what I believe to be the only copy of the original"!. Note: The importance of the text is indicated by its appearance in "The Making of the Modern World: The Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature 1450-1850". Locke uses the title phrase in his "Second Treatise" e.g. "Whoever therefore from thenceforth by inheritance purchase permission or otherways enjoys any part of the land so annexed to and under the government of that common-wealth must take it with the condition it is under; that is of submitting to the government of the common-wealth under whose jurisdiction it is as far forth as any subject of it." And Hobbes's "Leviathan". London: Printed, by William du-Gard, and Henry Hills, Printers to His Highness the Lord Protector. MDCLIII (1653). hardcover

réf. 17742On letterhead of the British Association of Film Directors The Players Club Denman Street London. 30 May 1927. 1p. 4to. In good condition lightly aged. Nash is named on the letterhead as the Association's president and Morgan as Honorary Secretary and Treasurer. The letter begins: Dear Percy / For various reasons we did not get a largely attended meeting on Friday but the better feeling between members seems still to grow.' Nash's 'protracted illness' has clearly necessitated his stepping down as president and 'after considerable discussion it was decided to ask Pearson & Elvey i.e. George Pearson 1875-1973 and Maurice Elvey 1887-1967 to be President & Vice with myself to continue'. He has been asked to convey the Association's sympathy to Nash for his illness '& a resolution was enthusiastically passed expressing the associations appreciation of your long continued & unselfish work particularly in connection with the great fight to obtain The Quota'. He ends by saying that he thinks that 'for your patience & endurance there would today be neither The Association or The Quota'. 'The Quota' is the Cinematograph Films Act of 1927 which required British cinemas to show a quota of British films. réf. 17800On Littler's letterhead 31 St Martin's Lane London. 29 May 1948. 1p. 12mo. In fair condition with light signs of age. Addressed to 'My dear Percy' and headed 'Love's Strategy'. Regarding the play which was based on Goldsmith's 'She Stoops to Conquer' Littler writes: 'I don't think the idea appeals to me very much and I am not going to do any more productions in the West End until after Christmas.' He gives his phone number writing that he would 'be very pleased to see you or have a word with you'. In the carbon of Nash's letter dated 27 May 1948 he writes that he has 'not messed about with the Author. There are about twenty instrumental and vocal numbers in it but it will not require a big orchestra.' He feels that the play would 'require a Box-Office cast'.
