1974rif. 45331974. Ford Gerald R. Pardon of Richard Nixon. 1974. This document records the exercise of presidential pardon power at the conclusion of the Watergate crisis when Gerald Ford granted Richard Nixon a full and unconditional pardon following his resignation from office. Issued one month after Nixon's August 9 1974 resignation the text situates the pardon within ongoing impeachment proceedings potential criminal liability and concerns over national stability. The material documents the constitutional system of executive clemency demonstrating how Article II authority was used to terminate the possibility of prosecution and to resolve a prolonged constitutional crisis. It provides primary-source evidence for the study of presidential power Watergate-era governance and debates over accountability justice and political reconciliation in the United States. Ford Gerald R. Pardon of Richard Nixon. Washington D.C.: The White House September 8 1974. One page quarto. Signed "G. Ford." The document opens with a formal summary of Nixon's presidency noting his election in 1968 reelection in 1972 and resignation in 1974. It references the House Judiciary Committee's impeachment inquiry including "votes adverse to Richard Nixon on recommended Articles of Impeachment" and outlines the legal context in which Nixon faced "possible indictment and trial for offenses against the United States." The text argues that a trial would prolong national division stating that "the tranquility to which this nation has been restored. could be irreparably lost" before invoking constitutional authority to grant "a full free and absolute pardon. for all offenses. committed or may have committed" during Nixon's presidency. The document concludes with the formal execution clause dated September 8 1974. The pardon marked a decisive moment in the resolution of Watergate ending the prospect of criminal proceedings against a former president while prompting immediate public and political debate over executive authority and accountability. Ford's action was widely interpreted as an effort to stabilize governance after months of televised hearings legal uncertainty and institutional strain. The document remains central to scholarship on constitutional limits separation of powers and the political consequences of clemency decisions. Light handling wear consistent with presentation copies; signature remains bold and legible. Overall very good condition. A signed example of one of the most consequential presidential documents of the twentieth century directly tied to the constitutional aftermath of Watergate. unknown

1982rif. 118drmAssociation Copy. A beautifully copy inscribed. To Ted Achilles With appreciation for his service to his nation from Richard Nixon Ted Achilles was a career diplomat who served as the Ambassador to Peru for President Truman. President Eisenhower named Achilles Counselor to the State Department where he was the head of a Special Task Force preparing for the Bay of Pigs Invasion First edition in beautiful condition. Book in fine condition and dust jacket nearly fine with only a few tiny chips in the top of the spine and a few barely noticeable chips at the bottom of spine. Clean text. Unclipped $17.50. Protected by Brodart book jacket cover. The former president draws portraits of major political and military figures of our times--including Douglas MacArthur Shigeru Yoshida Konrad Adenauer Charles de Gaulle Zhou Enlai Mao Winston Churchill Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev. A review of the book in 1982 by the Christian Science Monitor included this in part. Richard Nixon will always be remembered for Watergate. But the former President's forte was foreign affairs. Thus it's doubtful that even the most rabid Nixonophobe will find much fault with the author's recollections of world leaders he was privileged to know during his checkered political career. ''Leaders'' is fascinating not only for the profiles of those who have shaped the modern world but because it provides a personal perspective on leadership from a man whose failures have affected the way Americans will measure their chief executives. Mr. Nixon delineates the significant difference between leadership and management. The manager he maintains is primarily concerned with short-term results while the leader is a man of vision who concentrates on the future. Accordingly his subjects are those individuals whose long view was never limited by the problem of political risks. Therefore the leaders he features were frequently rejected by their constituencies because they refused to play it safe. Warner Books hardcover

Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Gene Light. A nice association. Richard Nixon knew virtually every major foreign leader since World War II—some at the pinnacle of power some during their “years in the wilderness” out of power and still others toward the end of their lives. His was an unparalleled opportunity to gain insight into the nature of the powerful and qualities of leadership. In Leaders Nixon shares these insights and experiences. He illustrates these leaders in private assesses their careers recalls words of wisdom and brings to bear his own judgments. We meet the co-architects of the New Japan Douglas MacArthur and Shigeru Yoshida. Encountering the legendary leaders of China—Mao Zedong Zhou Enlai and Chiang Kai-shek—we see the men behind the events. We see the intensely private Charles DeGaulle; explore the philosophies of Konraud Adenauer; confront Leonid Brezhnev; and delight in the company of Winston Churchill—not to mention Nixon’s analyses of interactions with dozens of other leaders.
