1857rif. 173408London: Bell & Daldy 1857. First edition. This is Nixon's account of his cruise through the Bass Strait during which he stayed with Aboriginal communities and examined how they lived from their haircuts to "the native potato so called by the colonists though never tasted by them and having not the most remote relation to the plant of that name except in a little resemblance of the tubers in shape and appearance to the kidney potato" p. 27. Francis Russell Nixon 1803-1879 was the first Bishop of Tasmania who embarked on his 1854 expedition to help the recently immigrated families who had little access to the church due to the remoteness of the area. During his two-month trip he established a chapel in Launceston which developed into a thriving congregation by his departure. Nixon served as bishop during a confusing period as for close to a decade of his tenure the island was still receiving thousands of convicts annually. He did not enjoy his posting with his superiors having a poor opinion of his work and so he relished personal endeavours more than his ministerial role being an "accomplished musician and artist" ODNB. rif. MB12Octavo ca. 185x122 cm 5 x 7 ¾ in. 2 pp. Brown ink on yellow wove paper. Light soiling and fold marls but overall a very good letter. Historically important manuscript letter from the early days of Oregon Territory est. in 1848 illustrating the construction of one of the earliest hotels in the Dalles inc. in 1857. The author Joseph Nixon ca. 1824-1892 was a native of Virginia who moved to Linn County O. T. in 1852. Originally a blacksmith Nixon constructed the renowned Umatilla Hotel in the Dalles in 1858. The first-class establishment located near the steamboat landing became a favored stop for miners navigating the Dalles River and was considered one of the finest hotels in the area. Nixon sold the hotel within a couple of years and by 1860 was listed as a carpenter and later as county treasurer in the Dalles. The hotel endured until 1929 eventually succumbing to fires and restorations before its final demolition. The letter dated 12 September 1858 is addressed to Daniel J. Hubbard ca. 1829-1890 a pioneer of Washington Territory and a farmer in the Chambers Prairie area near Olympia. In the 1850s Hubbard served as a non-commissioned officer at Washington Fort Dalles where he likely crossed paths with Nixon. In the text full of grammatical mistakes Nixon updates “Friend Hubbard” on the latest news from the Dalles and enthusiastically shares the nearing completion of the Umatilla Hotel. He mentions the expected finish date after months of hard work and proudly recounts two successful balls held at the hotel. He also remarks on the lack of reliable news from the mines likely referring to the Fraser River Gold Rush and discusses other Washington pioneers including Hubbard’s neighbor George Tykel. Overall historically interesting original letter from the early days of Oregon Territory. The text of the letter: Friend Hubbard. I take my pen in hand to let you no that I am in good health at present. Hoping this may find you and all of the – in good health. Times here are much the saim as when you lef. No news of any reliabel sorse from the mines as yet from this way. I am abot to finish my house at last. I have about one months work on it. Your friends here are all in good health. There has been 2 balls at my house. They went off very nice. They were attended by the first 23 & second 28 couples. John has gone to Walla Walla. As I just wrote you a letter a few days since o I have no news to write. Give my respects to friends Tycle George Tykel also all of the fair sex. Write often. unknown

1983rif. 152046New York: Privately Printed for Richard Nixon 1983. The privately printed limited first edition of Nixon's fifth book. Octavo original publisher's cloth with gilt titles to the spine. One of 1000 copies. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the title page "To Sherry Griner with appreciation for her loyal support over the years - from Richard Nixon 12-30-87." Fine in a very good dust jacket. In this terse closely argued book about geopolitical strategy Richard Nixon asserts that while the tools of modern warfare have made war a practical impossibility our differences with the Soviet Union remain profound irreconcilable and potentially deadly. How can we navigate between the impossible and the irreconcilable and establish a real lasting peace is the sum and substance of the former President's message. First the author debunks what he calls the myths of peace chimeras such as disarmament peace-through-trade personal friendships between leaders and world government schemes. President Nixon says that such policies-pursued by themselves-have never averted war and that we court disaster by pretending that they will now. Then he describes the key that can unlock the door to peace: "hard-headed détente" a pragmatic mixture of détente and deterrence that encompasses the full range of political and economic relations between east and West. He shows how we can use summitry economic power and other means to deter Soviet misbehavior and at the same time reduce the chances of world war. Privately Printed for Richard Nixon hardcover

1974rif. 45281974. Ford Gerald R. "President Gerald Ford Speech Pardoning Richard Nixon" September 8 1974 issued one month after the resignation of Richard Nixon constitutes the formal executive action that terminated federal criminal exposure arising from the Watergate scandal and redefined the limits of presidential accountability. Delivered during the immediate post-resignation crisis the proclamation invokes Article II Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution to grant "a full free and absolute pardon" asserting the continuity of executive authority at a moment of institutional instability. The document directly articulates Ford's justification for clemency in language emphasizing national recovery over prosecution including the statements: "I deeply believe in equal justice for all Americans. the law is a respecter of reality" and "my primary concern must always be the greatest good of all the people of the United States." It concludes with the decisive constitutional act: "Now therefore I Gerald R. Ford. have granted. a full free and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States" followed by the date September 8 1974. Single-page souvenir copy of the pardon speech headed "President Gerald Ford Speech Pardoning Richard Nixon" bearing a blue-ink signature "G. R. F." The text reproduces Ford's official proclamation language including his assertion that "my conscience tells me. I cannot prolong the bad dreams. only I as President have the constitutional power to firmly shut and seal this book" framing the pardon as an act intended to conclude national political crisis. The document presents the full formal declaration of clemency alongside Ford's explanatory rhetoric preserving both the legal mechanism and its contemporaneous justification. Issued at the close of the Watergate investigations and immediately following Nixon's departure from office the pardon marked a decisive intervention in the relationship between executive power and criminal liability shaping subsequent debates over presidential immunity accountability and the scope of constitutional pardon authority. The language of the proclamation grounded in both legal authority and moral reasoning has remained central to historical and legal scholarship on executive clemency and crisis governance in the United States. Light handling wear; clean and legible throughout; signature clear. Overall very good condition. unknown

Inscribed on the half-title: "To Bob Taylor / With appreciation for his years of service to the nation / from / Richard Nixon / 11-26-80." Robert H. Taylor 1927-1981 was the special agent in charge of the White House detail during the Johnson and Nixon administrations. He first came to Vice President Nixon's attention on a trip to Caracas Venezuela when a mob attacked the Vice-Presidential motorcade. Taylor along with other agents protected the vice-presidential party and de-escalated the situation without harming any protesters. As special agent in charge of White House security he often clashed with Nixon aides who wanted more public access for the president. Fellow secret service agents described Taylor as: ".the public's image of a Secret Service agent. Everyone on the White House detail respected him but he had a lightning temper and wasn't one to ingratiate himself with anyone including the President the White House staff and the Secret Service hierarchy." After a dispute with Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman Taylor was transferred and soon after retired from the Secret Service. He passed away in 1981 from cancer at the age of 54. Warner Books unknown
