1974ref. 45301974. Ford Gerald R. Richard Nixon Pardon Proclamation. September 8 1974. Gerald R. Ford signed text of the presidential proclamation granting a full pardon to former President Richard Nixon issued weeks after Nixon's resignation during the Watergate crisis. The document records Ford's constitutional use of executive clemency at a moment when the United States confronted the first presidential resignation in its history and the unresolved legal consequences of the Watergate investigation. By invoking Article II Section 2 of the Constitution Ford granted Nixon "a full free and absolute pardon.for all offenses against the United States.committed or may have been committed.from January 20 1969 through August 9 1974." The decision immediately became one of the most debated acts of executive authority in modern American political history raising questions about accountability constitutional power and national reconciliation following the Watergate scandal. Souvenir printing of the presidential proclamation signed by President Gerald R. Ford in ink. One page quarto format. The printed text summarizes Nixon's presidency from his inauguration in 1969 through his resignation on August 9 1974 following the House Judiciary Committee's impeachment inquiry explaining that potential criminal prosecution remained possible and that a trial of a former president could extend national division. The document then declares Ford's exercise of the presidential pardon power formally granting clemency to Nixon for any federal offenses committed during his presidency. Ford's pardon of Nixon marked a defining episode in the political aftermath of the Watergate investigation which exposed extensive abuses of executive power illegal surveillance and obstruction of justice within the Nixon administration. Announced only one month after Nixon left office the pardon sought to prevent a prolonged criminal prosecution of a former president and to stabilize the political climate following years of scandal and constitutional crisis. The decision was widely controversial and contributed to a significant decline in Ford's public approval yet it also remains central to debates about executive authority political accountability and the limits of presidential clemency in the United States. Signed material connected directly to the Nixon pardon provides documentary evidence of one of the most consequential constitutional decisions of the twentieth century. Light handling wear with minor creasing typical of a circulated souvenir document. Ink signature clear and legible. Overall condition good to very good. unknown
