1967réf. 1518901967. Original typed letter signed by the thirty-seventh First Lady of the United States Pat Nixon. Duodecimo one page typed on "Mrs. Richard Nixon" letterhead addressed to Loretta Stuart. The letter reads in full "Dear Loretta Stuart: All of us were distressed to hear that you have had a set-back on your road to complete recovery. You will be in our thoughts and prayers! Tricia is a senior in college this year and Julie is a sophomore -- so your little girls are now grown. Time has flown since the days when you gave them the pretty hair styles and permanents. Louise Johnson wrote from London to say that she hoped to visit here during the Christmas season. I know she will be looking for you solve the problems she seems to find with hairdressers abroad. I haven't seen her since a year ago -- so am looking forward to her visit. With affection Pat." In near fine condition with spotting and light toning. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope stamp dated 11 Nov 1967. Thelma Catherine "Pat" Nixon 1912–1993 was the thirty-seventh First Lady of the United States serving alongside her husband President Richard M. Nixon from 1969 to 1974 and one of the most quietly resilient and extensively traveled First Ladies in the history of the office. Born in Ely Nevada to Irish immigrant parents she grew up in considerable hardship losing both parents before she was eighteen and working her way through the University of Southern California where she graduated cum laude in 1937 with a degree in merchandising. She met Richard Nixon in a Whittier California amateur theater production in 1938; he proposed on their first meeting and she married him in 1940 after two years of patient courtship. As First Lady she undertook an ambitious program of White House restoration and historical preservation acquiring significant works of American decorative art for the executive mansion and opening the White House grounds and gardens to the public for the first time. An instinctive and gifted diplomat in her own right she accompanied the President on his historic 1972 trip to China and his visits to the Soviet Union and eight Latin American countries becoming at the time of her death the most widely traveled First Lady in American history. The Watergate scandal and her husband's resignation in August 1974 — the only presidential resignation in American history — exacted a devastating personal toll and she suffered a stroke in 1976 from which she never fully recovered. Described by those who knew her as possessed of genuine warmth steely self-discipline and a private depth of feeling she rarely permitted the public to see Pat Nixon remains one of the more poignant and underexamined figures in the modern American presidency. unknown

réf. 152845Washington 1974. Rare large Official White House color photograph of President Richard Nixon and his cabinet signed by the President Vice President Gerald Ford and sixteen members of his cabinet. The full-length group portrait taken by a White House photographer shows the President and his cabinet standing in a row in the Oval Office each having signed vertically in the image above his or her portrait. Those signing are President Richard Nixon Vice President Gerald Ford Secretary of State Henry Kissinger Secretary of the Treasury George Shultz Secretary of Defense James R. Schlesinger Attorney General William B. Saxbe Secretary of the Interior Rogers Morton Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz Secretary of Commerce Frederick B. Dent Secretary of Labor Peter J. Brennan Secretary of Health Education and Welfare Caspar Weinberger Secretary of Housing and Urban Development James T. Lynn Secretary of Transportation Claude Brinegar Budget Director Roy Ash Counselors Bryce Harlow Melvin Laird and Anne L. Armstrong and United Nations Ambassador John A. Scali lacking only the signature of Postmaster General E. T. Klassen. Triple matted and framed. In near fine condition with some fading to the signatures of Ford Dent and Ash some fading to the image a few scattered minor creases. The entire piece measures 21 inches by 17 inches. A remarkable record of the Nixon cabinet in the final months of his presidency uniting the signatures of the president his future successor and his cabinet on a single official White House image. Richard Nixon 1913-1994 the thirty-seventh President of the United States assembled this cabinet in the final embattled period of his presidency as the Watergate scandal closed in around him. The photograph is doubly historic for including Vice President Gerald Ford whom Nixon had appointed to replace the disgraced Spiro Agnew in December 1973 and who would succeed to the presidency upon Nixon’s resignation in August 1974 becoming the only person ever to serve as president without having been elected to either the presidency or the vice presidency. Among the signers are Secretary of State Henry Kissinger Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger and Treasury Secretary George Shultz figures who shaped American policy through one of the most turbulent chapters in the nation’s modern history. unknown

1988réf. 192435New York: Simon and Schuster 1988. First edition first printing signed limited issue number 534 of 600 copies signed by the author and specially bound. Written in the final years of the Cold War Nixon's book considers the question of what the US could do in the following 11 years to set the foundation for a peaceful and prosperous international order in the 21st century. Nixon maintains the hawkish approach that characterized his own time in the White House. He advocates for continued support of Nicaragua's contras more American cruise missiles in Europe the continuance of covert CIA operations abroad and the establishment of US air bases in Saudi Arabia. He opposes protectionism against Japan and endorses the development of laser-based weapons in space the so-called "Star Wars". Of some note is his assumption that the Soviet Union would still be an existing superpower at the end of the century - he proposes a rapprochement similar to his engagement with China. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt. With blue cloth slipcase. A fine copy. hardcover

réf. 195101New York: Warner Books 1982. From one leader to another First edition a superb presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title: "To Prime Minister Harold Wilson with warm regards from Richard Nixon 1982". Wilson was prime minister at both the beginning and the end of Nixon's presidency serving from 1964 to 1970 and again from 1974 to 1976. Despite their political differences the two men enjoyed cordial personal relations. Welcoming Wilson to Washington on 27 January 1970 Nixon called him "an old friend not only in government but as an old friend personally". Anglo-American relations improved during their first period in office together. Relations became more difficult under Wilson's successor Edward Heath who gave priority to British entry into the European Economic Community. Wilson continued to regard close relations with Washington as central to British foreign policy and his return to office in March 1974 brought renewed contact with Nixon. Following Nixon's disgrace after Watergate on a 1978 visit to the United Kingdom Wilson was happy to meet with Nixon who was at that time shunned both by the James Callaghan government and by Edward Heath. Leaders combines political portraits with Nixon's personal recollections of the statesmen he encountered during his career. It formed part of the series of books interviews and foreign-policy interventions through which he sought to rebuild his public reputation after Watergate. Wilson's library was dispersed by auction in 2019. Octavo. Original black quarter cloth blue paper-covered sides spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Housed in a black cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Note in Wilson's hand "258" to rear blank and to rear flap of jacket presumably referencing the page detailing De Gasperi and the 1982 Polish demonstrations. A little light soiling to top edge and thumbing to book; unclipped jacket with some wear at extremities: a very good copy in very good jacket. hardcover

réf. MB12Octavo ca. 185x122 cm 5 x 7 ¾ in. 2 pp. Brown ink on yellow wove paper. Light soiling and fold marls but overall a very good letter. Historically important manuscript letter from the early days of Oregon Territory est. in 1848 illustrating the construction of one of the earliest hotels in the Dalles inc. in 1857. The author Joseph Nixon ca. 1824-1892 was a native of Virginia who moved to Linn County O. T. in 1852. Originally a blacksmith Nixon constructed the renowned Umatilla Hotel in the Dalles in 1858. The first-class establishment located near the steamboat landing became a favored stop for miners navigating the Dalles River and was considered one of the finest hotels in the area. Nixon sold the hotel within a couple of years and by 1860 was listed as a carpenter and later as county treasurer in the Dalles. The hotel endured until 1929 eventually succumbing to fires and restorations before its final demolition. The letter dated 12 September 1858 is addressed to Daniel J. Hubbard ca. 1829-1890 a pioneer of Washington Territory and a farmer in the Chambers Prairie area near Olympia. In the 1850s Hubbard served as a non-commissioned officer at Washington Fort Dalles where he likely crossed paths with Nixon. In the text full of grammatical mistakes Nixon updates “Friend Hubbard” on the latest news from the Dalles and enthusiastically shares the nearing completion of the Umatilla Hotel. He mentions the expected finish date after months of hard work and proudly recounts two successful balls held at the hotel. He also remarks on the lack of reliable news from the mines likely referring to the Fraser River Gold Rush and discusses other Washington pioneers including Hubbard’s neighbor George Tykel. Overall historically interesting original letter from the early days of Oregon Territory. The text of the letter: Friend Hubbard. I take my pen in hand to let you no that I am in good health at present. Hoping this may find you and all of the – in good health. Times here are much the saim as when you lef.
