1857réf. 173408London: Bell & Daldy 1857. First edition. This is Nixon's account of his cruise through the Bass Strait during which he stayed with Aboriginal communities and examined how they lived from their haircuts to "the native potato so called by the colonists though never tasted by them and having not the most remote relation to the plant of that name except in a little resemblance of the tubers in shape and appearance to the kidney potato" p. 27. Francis Russell Nixon 1803-1879 was the first Bishop of Tasmania who embarked on his 1854 expedition to help the recently immigrated families who had little access to the church due to the remoteness of the area. During his two-month trip he established a chapel in Launceston which developed into a thriving congregation by his departure. Nixon served as bishop during a confusing period as for close to a decade of his tenure the island was still receiving thousands of convicts annually. He did not enjoy his posting with his superiors having a poor opinion of his work and so he relished personal endeavours more than his ministerial role being an "accomplished musician and artist" ODNB. 1807réf. 21581London 1807. No one could capture an exuberant crowd like Rowlandson here in an etching that the lurid street entertainments and hubbub of the notorious Bartholomew Fair which would later be shut down by the City of London because of its unruliness. The crowd is as a part of the entertainment as the professional entertainers with their side-show like booths. The print proper of ours is essentially clean the colors bright. Minor soiling affects the lower margin area. The other sides of ours have been trimmed to the edge of the illustration and thus there are no margins other than the lower one. Ours has been mounted onto a paper close in color the that of the print and that provides some illusion of margin. unknown
