About the book: When President Dwight Eisenhower left Washington D.C. at the end of his second term he retired to a farm in historic Gettysburg Pennsylvania that he had bought a decade earlier. Living on the farm with the former president and his wife Mamie were his son daughter-in-law and four grandchildren the oldest of whom David was just entering his teens. In this engaging and fascinating memoir David Eisenhowerwhose previous book about his grandfather Eisenhower at War 19431945 was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prizeprovides a uniquely intimate account of the final years of the former president and general one of the giants of the twentieth century. In Going Home to Glory Dwight Eisenhower emerges as both a beloved and forbidding figure. He was eager to advise instruct and assist his young grandson but as a general of the army and president he held to the highest imaginable standards. At the same time Eisenhower was trying to define a new political role for himself. Ostensibly the leader of the Republican party he was prepared to counsel his successor John F. Kennedy who sought instead to break with Eisenhowers policies. In contrast Kennedys successor Lyndon Johnson would eagerly seek Eisenhowers advice. As the tumultuous 1960s dawned with assassinations riots and the deeply divisive war in Vietnam plus a Republican nominee for president in 1964 whom Eisenhower considered unqualified the former president tried to chart the correct course for himself his party and the country. Meanwhile the past continued to pull on him as he wrote his memoirs and publishers and broadcasters asked him to reminisce about his wartime experiences.>< About the book: When President Dwight Eisenhower left Washington D.C. at the end of his second term he retired to a farm in historic Gettysburg Pennsylvania that he had bought a decade earlier. An intimate account of the final years of the author's grandfather ex- President Dwight Eisenhower. Program from a National Archives lecture and book signing laid in. Derived from a Kirkus review: Dwight Eisenhower's grandson David and Richard Nixon's daughter Julie present an insightful memoir of the ex-president's retirement years. On leaving office the former president and his wife moved to his Gettysburg Pa. farm to live near his son and grandchildren including the then 12 year-old author David. The bruising 1960 presidential campaign left him bitterly resentful of President Kennedy and no fan of the press especially when polls gave his presidency low marks. The author adds that Eisenhower remained a national hero and the most influential Republican. Former Vice President Nixon was in temporary eclipse having lost the presidency in 1960 and lost again in California's 1962 governor's race. The author intermixes politics with an affectionate account of Eisenhower's domestic routine which included a great deal of TV watching golf bridge painting and socializing with friends but also writing intense devotion to running a working farm and delivering sage advice to young people including the adolescent author. Few readers will be surprised at the former president's lack of sympathy with '60s morals music and civil disorder but the author stresses that he disliked discrimination against blacks and supported Kennedy's and Johnson's civil-rights legislation. The author's mixture of personal memories and research produces a fine addition to the history of both Eisenhower and the '60s. Simon & Schuster hardcover

1954réf. 153459Cherry Hills Village Colorado 1954. Exceptionally rare original golf scorecard from the Cherry Hills Country Club outside Denver dated October 7 1954 signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard M. Nixon from a round the two men shared during Eisenhower’s first term. The card preserves the hole-by-hole scores of the four players each in his own column and is signed at the foot by Nixon as the player attested by A.G. Rydstrom and signed in full by Dwight D. Eisenhower. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon formed one of the most consequential partnerships in American political history. Eisenhower 1890-1969 the Supreme Allied Commander who directed the Normandy invasion and the defeat of Nazi Germany was elected the thirty-fourth president in 1952 and chose the young California senator Richard Nixon as his running mate joining the most admired soldier of his generation to an ambitious thirty-nine-year-old anti-communist crusader. Across two terms they presided over a decade of postwar prosperity the building of the interstate highway system the end of the Korean War and the tense early years of the Cold War. Nixon 1913-1994 as vice president took on an unusually active role traveling the world as the administration’s emissary and standing in during the president’s illnesses among them the heart attack Eisenhower suffered in 1955 the year after this round was played. He would lose the presidency to John F. Kennedy by a hair in 1960 win it in 1968 open relations with China and resign in the wake of Watergate in 1974 the only president ever to do so. For Eisenhower golf was a passion that shaped his presidency as much as any policy. He played more than eight hundred rounds while in office had a putting green installed on the White House South Lawn and did more than any other figure to popularize the game in postwar America. A scorecard carrying the signatures of both men from a round they played together at the height of the Eisenhower era unites two presidents on a single sheet in the pastime the president loved above all others. Handsomely double matted in green suede with an engraved brass plaque and archivally framed. In fine condition the scorecard toned with light handling folds. The round recorded on this card was played at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village Colorado on October 7 1954 a course Eisenhower favored during his frequent Colorado golf retreats and the site of several United States Opens. Joining the President and Vice President were the club’s professional Rip Arnold and A.A. Rydstrom. Ralph “Rip” Arnold was the longtime head professional at Cherry Hills and one of Eisenhower’s regular playing partners and informal instructors during the president’s many visits to Colorado where his wife Mamie had deep family roots in Denver. The brass plaque beneath the card names all four participants President Dwight D. Eisenhower Vice President Richard M. Nixon professional golfer Rip Arnold and Mr. A.A. Rydstrom while the card itself lists each of them hole by hole in his own column a modest and human record of an afternoon shared on the course and kept exactly as it was scored. unknown
