rif. 152845Washington 1974. Rare large Official White House color photograph of President Richard Nixon and his cabinet signed by the President Vice President Gerald Ford and sixteen members of his cabinet. The full-length group portrait taken by a White House photographer shows the President and his cabinet standing in a row in the Oval Office each having signed vertically in the image above his or her portrait. Those signing are President Richard Nixon Vice President Gerald Ford Secretary of State Henry Kissinger Secretary of the Treasury George Shultz Secretary of Defense James R. Schlesinger Attorney General William B. Saxbe Secretary of the Interior Rogers Morton Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz Secretary of Commerce Frederick B. Dent Secretary of Labor Peter J. Brennan Secretary of Health Education and Welfare Caspar Weinberger Secretary of Housing and Urban Development James T. Lynn Secretary of Transportation Claude Brinegar Budget Director Roy Ash Counselors Bryce Harlow Melvin Laird and Anne L. Armstrong and United Nations Ambassador John A. Scali lacking only the signature of Postmaster General E. T. Klassen. Triple matted and framed. In near fine condition with some fading to the signatures of Ford Dent and Ash some fading to the image a few scattered minor creases. The entire piece measures 21 inches by 17 inches. A remarkable record of the Nixon cabinet in the final months of his presidency uniting the signatures of the president his future successor and his cabinet on a single official White House image. Richard Nixon 1913-1994 the thirty-seventh President of the United States assembled this cabinet in the final embattled period of his presidency as the Watergate scandal closed in around him. The photograph is doubly historic for including Vice President Gerald Ford whom Nixon had appointed to replace the disgraced Spiro Agnew in December 1973 and who would succeed to the presidency upon Nixon’s resignation in August 1974 becoming the only person ever to serve as president without having been elected to either the presidency or the vice presidency. Among the signers are Secretary of State Henry Kissinger Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger and Treasury Secretary George Shultz figures who shaped American policy through one of the most turbulent chapters in the nation’s modern history. unknown

rif. 149952Rare Apollo XI quarantine image signed by President Richard Nixon and Apollo XI astronauts Neil Armstrong Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. The image shows Apollo XI crew members in quarantine being congratulated by President Nixon through a microphone. The oversized color photograph appears to be a blow-up of a contemporary magazine page complete with printed captions and is mounted on chipboard. Signed by Richard Nixon Neil Armstrong Buzz Aldrin and inscribed by Michael Collins "Best wishes to Felix - M Collins." The caption beneath the image reads: Once inside a special trailer where they began an eighteen-day period of quarantine to preclude contamination of the earth by potential moon germs the astronauts talked and joked by microphone with a jubilant President Nixon who was moved to acclaim their accomplishment as the greatest feat since the creation of the universe. Triple matted and framed. A very uncommon assemblage of signatures. Richard Nixon’s presidency became permanently entwined with Apollo 11 as the mission unfolded in July 1969 as both a scientific triumph and a powerful emblem of American leadership in the Cold War. Nixon followed the flight closely from the White House speaking repeatedly of the astronauts as representatives of the nation and after the lunar landing he placed a live telephone call to Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the Moon—an unprecedented gesture he later described as the most historic phone call ever made. When Apollo 11 returned safely to Earth Nixon greeted Armstrong Aldrin and Michael Collins aboard the USS Hornet praising their achievement as a victory for “peaceful purposes” and for all mankind while also underscoring the technological and ideological stakes of the space race. He awarded the astronauts the Presidential Medal of Freedom and sent them on a global goodwill tour that functioned as cultural diplomacy projecting U.S. ingenuity and stability at a moment of domestic strain. In Nixon’s rhetoric and staging Apollo 11 was both a culmination of the Kennedy-era lunar goal and a visible affirmation of American prestige—an event he sought to frame as a unifying national milestone and a benchmark of what the country could accomplish. unknown
1993rif. 151891January 9 1993. Rare original card celebrating President Richard Nixon's 80th birthday. A card depicting him with his four grandchildren at Woodcliff Lake in New Jersey: Melanie Eisenhower Christopher Cox Jennie Eisenhower and Alex Eisenhower. Boldly signed by Richard Nixon to the bottom right in black felt tip. In fine condition. The piece measures 7 inches by 5 inches. Richard Milhous Nixon 1913–1994 the thirty-seventh President of the United States remains one of the most complex and consequential figures in modern American political history — a man of formidable intellect and strategic vision whose presidency produced genuine achievements of the first order alongside one of the most catastrophic failures of political judgment the office has ever witnessed. Born in Yorba Linda California and educated at Whittier College and Duke University School of Law Nixon served as a Naval officer in the Pacific rose through the House and Senate on the strength of his aggressive anti-communist credentials and served two terms as Eisenhower's Vice President before losing narrowly to Kennedy in 1960 and engineering one of the most remarkable political comebacks in American history with his election to the presidency in 1968. His foreign policy record was substantial — the opening of China détente with the Soviet Union the withdrawal from Vietnam and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency among his lasting contributions — but everything was ultimately consumed by Watergate the cover-up of a burglary at Democratic National Committee headquarters that led to his resignation on August 9 1974 the only presidential resignation in American history. Pardoned by Gerald Ford Nixon spent his final two decades writing prolifically on foreign policy and partially rehabilitating his public standing. He died in April 1994 at the age of eighty-one and his funeral was attended by all five living former presidents — a gesture of institutional respect for a man whose gifts and flaws were each in their different ways outsized. unknown

In particular the pardon covered Nixon's actions during the Watergate scandal. In a televised broadcast to the nation Ford who had succeeded to the presidency upon Nixon's resignation explained that he felt the pardon was in the best interests of the country and that the Nixon family's situation was "a tragedy in which we all have played a part. It could go on and on and on or someone must write the end to it. I have concluded that only I can do that and if I can I must." unknown
