1974réf. 45331974. Ford Gerald R. Pardon of Richard Nixon. 1974. This document records the exercise of presidential pardon power at the conclusion of the Watergate crisis when Gerald Ford granted Richard Nixon a full and unconditional pardon following his resignation from office. Issued one month after Nixon's August 9 1974 resignation the text situates the pardon within ongoing impeachment proceedings potential criminal liability and concerns over national stability. The material documents the constitutional system of executive clemency demonstrating how Article II authority was used to terminate the possibility of prosecution and to resolve a prolonged constitutional crisis. It provides primary-source evidence for the study of presidential power Watergate-era governance and debates over accountability justice and political reconciliation in the United States. Ford Gerald R. Pardon of Richard Nixon. Washington D.C.: The White House September 8 1974. One page quarto. Signed "G. Ford." The document opens with a formal summary of Nixon's presidency noting his election in 1968 reelection in 1972 and resignation in 1974. It references the House Judiciary Committee's impeachment inquiry including "votes adverse to Richard Nixon on recommended Articles of Impeachment" and outlines the legal context in which Nixon faced "possible indictment and trial for offenses against the United States." The text argues that a trial would prolong national division stating that "the tranquility to which this nation has been restored. could be irreparably lost" before invoking constitutional authority to grant "a full free and absolute pardon. for all offenses. committed or may have committed" during Nixon's presidency. The document concludes with the formal execution clause dated September 8 1974. The pardon marked a decisive moment in the resolution of Watergate ending the prospect of criminal proceedings against a former president while prompting immediate public and political debate over executive authority and accountability. Ford's action was widely interpreted as an effort to stabilize governance after months of televised hearings legal uncertainty and institutional strain. The document remains central to scholarship on constitutional limits separation of powers and the political consequences of clemency decisions. Light handling wear consistent with presentation copies; signature remains bold and legible. Overall very good condition. A signed example of one of the most consequential presidential documents of the twentieth century directly tied to the constitutional aftermath of Watergate. unknown
1974réf. 130081974. Richard Nixon Resigns as 37th President of the United States 1974 commemorates the unprecedented resignation that ended Richard Nixon's presidency during the Watergate crisis providing a precisely dated artifact for the study of Watergate presidential succession political commemoration and American political culture. Nixon became the first United States president to resign from office on August 9 1974 following the investigations and constitutional confrontations arising from the Watergate break in and its cover up. Richard Nixon Resigns as 37th President of the United States. Washington D.C. August 9 1974. Prestamped commemorative envelope bearing an image of Nixon and printed text concerning the Watergate era resignation prominently reading "Richard Nixon Resigns as 37th President of the United States." The envelope carries a Washington D.C. postmark reading "Aug 9 1974 AM" placing its postal cancellation in the nation's capital on the morning of Nixon's departure from office. The combination of portraiture declarative resignation text and same day cancellation gives the piece particular documentary specificity as political and postal ephemera associated with the transfer of presidential power. Nixon had announced his decision to resign in a televised address on August 8; on the following morning he signed his formal resignation letter which became effective when Secretary of State Henry Kissinger initialed it at 11:35 a.m. Gerald Ford was sworn in as the thirty eighth president at 12:05 p.m. The envelope's "AM" cancellation therefore corresponds to the morning on which Nixon's resignation formally took effect giving the object a direct chronological relationship to the first presidential resignation in United States history. It offers a compact record of how a constitutional and political crisis was immediately translated into commemorative material culture and supports research into Watergate presidential imagery political ephemera and the public documentation of major national events. No specific defects are reported; near fine. A closely dated piece of Watergate ephemera distinguished by its Washington cancellation on the day Nixon left the presidency. unknown
