1978réf. 007173London: Scolar Press 1978 4to 26 cm 232 10 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket dj slightly rubbed at extremities. A collection of the complete English Bookbindings series contributed by Howard M. Nixon to The Book Collector between 1952 and 1977 gathered here to mark the series' hundredth article. Nixon Librarian of Westminster Abbey and formerly head of Rare Book Collections at the British Library arranged the one hundred bindings in chronological order from a Caxton binder of c. 1483 to a Cosway binding of c. 1928. The original texts were revised and expanded where subsequent scholarship required it with a new introduction a bibliography Books and Articles on English Bookbinding and an index. The bindings illustrate the full range of named and anonymous English binders and workshops over four and a half centuries including the Caxton and Fishtail Binders; panel-stamped bindings for Henry VIII; the Greenwich bindery; Samuel Mearne and the Restoration "Queens' Binders"; Roger Payne; Charles Lewis; Francis Bedford; the Guild of Women-Binders; T. J. Cobden-Sanderson; Katharine Adams; and Riviere & Son. Royal ecclesiastical and distinguished private bindings are well represented including bindings associated with Edward VI Elizabeth I James I Charles II James II Archbishop Parker Lord Burghley Oliver Cromwell Thomas Hollis and the Prince Consort. As Nixon explains in his introduction three principles governed the selection: only bindings not previously published in book form were included; the examples were chosen to provide balanced coverage of the entire period since the introduction of printing; and each entry was required to contribute at least one new fact. The earliest European bindings already treated by G. D. Hobson were deliberately excluded as were bindings by living craftsmen covered separately in Dorothy Harrop's parallel Book Collector series. Long regarded alongside the work of Hobson Goldschmidt and Oldham as one of the standard concise references for the identification and history of English bookbinding. Scolar Press hardcover
