Later as Vice President Nixon penned the introduction to Toledano's 1960 book Lament for a Generation and Toledano later occupied a key but unofficial advisory role in the Nixon White House. As special agent in charge of White House security he often clashed with Nixon aides who wanted more public access for the president. Fellow secret service agents described Taylor as: ".the public's image of a Secret Service agent. Everyone on the White House detail respected him but he had a lightning temper and wasn't one to ingratiate himself with anyone including the President the White House staff and the Secret Service hierarchy." After a dispute with Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman Taylor was transferred and soon after retired from the Secret Service. He passed away in 1981 from cancer at the age of 54.
