1868In-8°, 4 volumi rilegati in mezza pelle, titolo e fregi in oro al dorso, nervi. Buone condizioni. In-8°, 4 volumes half leather binding, back title, bands. Good condition. De la démocratie (XLVI, 371pp; 442; 564), L’ancien régime (XIV, 446) Arrived in 1831 in America to escape the consequences of the Revolution, the young Alexis de Tocqueville was ready to immerse himself in a new reality and to leave behind the confusion of French political life. Shortly thereafter he would discover a domineering society, an unexplored world that no one had yet described or truly understood. These are the origins of the Democracy in America treaty. To discover Tocqueville's political instinct was above all the discovery of the radical diversity between the United States and France: in America, democracy was "life". The discovery of America, for Tocqueville, translates in all respects into a new "political science" which, building on the American model, with its peaks of progress and its weak points, can and must be applied to all societies advanced. Published for the first time in 1856, "The Old Regime and the Revolution" is based on a very thorough research, never carried out before, of the French administrative and public documents of 18th century. With an exposition of exceptional clarity and remarkable critical acumen, Tocqueville highlights not only the system of government of French absolutism, but also, and above all, the class structure of pre-revolutionary France undermined by profound internal contradictions. The fundamental idea that arises from this research is that of a substantial continuity between France of the Old regime and France of the nineteenth century, represented above all by the tendency towards administrative centralization, an element that pushes in the direction of authoritarian regimes or which in any case has many limits on the explanation of political freedom, in the name of which the Revolution had begun.
