A compilation of traditional Swiss folk songs and occasional instrumental selections including music for the Alphorn and solo piano compositions many arranged by Ferdinand Fürchtegott Huber. The alphorn was a "wooden trumpet of pastoral communities in the Alps. . The commonest length of the alphorn is about 185 cm in which case its range extends to the 5th or 6th harmonic as quoted by Beethoven at the end of the Pastoral Symphony. . Alphorns were known best as herdsmen's calling instruments serving also in some areas to summon to church and formerly to war. They may also be numinous: among the Mari of Russia the long wooden trumpet is made for the spring festival and afterwards sacrificially burnt or hidden in a sacred place. Overall likeness in making and using alphorns and their distribution suggest that they possibly may have originated among post-Celtic peoples of the Migration Era. There is no firm evidence of prior existence; 'cornu alpinus' in Tacitus is less than proof of a wooden trumpet of which the earliest specimen from the 9th-century Oseberg ship Oslo Vikingskiphuset supports iconographic suggestions that wooden trumpets of moderate size were used as summoning and military instruments in early medieval northern Europe in addition to their pastoral functions." Anthony C. Baines revised by Max Peter Baumann in Grove Music Online. Rossini evoked the Alphorn in his iconic 1829 William Tell Overture. Of great importance to the preservation of the oral heritage of Swiss alpine herders. J. J. Burgdorfer unknown

Cleland / March 25 1950." This copy is from the library of Charles B. Voorhis and bears his elegant custom bookplate on the front paste down. Voorhis was a noted California philanthropist primarily associated with Cal Polytechnic in Pomona. Here is what California State Univ says of him: "California State Polytechnic University Pomona has its origins in the philanthropy of two notable individuals in the 1930s one of whom was Charles Brown Voorhis. Mr. Voorhis was born in Kansas and eventually located to Los Angeles California. He had extensive business experience in both General Motors and the Nash Motors Companies in the late teens to late twenties. He was appointed to the Los Angeles Regional Board of the Federal Reserve Bank and served one two-year term as its chairperson. Concerned with the plight of homeless children during the height of the Depression Mr. Voorhis and his wife Ella Ward Smith organized the Voorhis School for Boys on a 150-acre site in San Dimas California in 1928 and endowed it with $1 million. In 1938 Mr. Voorhis made a gift of the school to the state of California for the California Polytechnic School in San Luis Obispo. The site continued to operate as a southern branch of California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo from 1938 through the spring of 1956. It was then merged with the new southern campus expansion Kellogg Unit of Cal Poly. In 1957 the combined units of Voorhis and Kellogg became California State Polytechnic College. Kellogg-Voorhis was eventually given individual status in the summer of 1986 thus making Mr. Charles Brown Voorhis one of the founders of Cal Poly Pomona. Mr. Voorhis' oldest son Horace Jeremiah "Jerry" Voorhis was the headmaster of the Voorhis School for Boys before serving as the U.S. Congressman from the district from 1936-1946.In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the state of California and higher education the Board of Trustees of the California State University and California State Polytechnic University Pomona are proud to confer upon Charles Brown Voorhis the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws posthumously. A very good copy in very good price-clipped dj. The dj was likely added to this copy later as the spine of the book is moderately faded. Very scarce in First Edition and signed.
