1520réf. ST12778-0887cParis: Gilles Hardouyn ca. 1520. 177 x 110 mm. 7 x 4 1/4". Single column 33 lines in an attractive gothic type. With hand-illuminated initials and a FULL-PAGE MINIATURE DEPICTING THE RAISING OF LAZARUS ILLUMINATED IN COLORS AND GOLD BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. See Hilary Maddocks "A Book of Hours by Anthoine Vérard" University of Melbourne Collections issue 16 2015 pp. 19-20. One quarter-inch repair to the center of the leaf which on the recto slightly affects Lazarus' neck and on the verso affects three letters which have been neatly touched up a handful of small chips to the paint the architectural border somewhat rubbed in the lower right corner mild soiling to the margins; not without flaws but a richly and carefully colored leaf that is still pleasing. Richly painted and amply highlighted with brushed gold this leaf from a printed Book of Hours includes a large miniature depicting the raising of Lazarus. Christ stands arm extended in benediction over the newly reawakened Lazarus who gazes up at him standing upright in his grave. A crowd looks on with a well-dressed man crouched in front of the grave apparently having helped Lazarus to stand. Our illuminator has enhanced the drama of the moment with the rosy cheeks of the bystanders emphasizing Lazarus' deathly pallor and with Jesus' shimmering robe distinguishing him from the crowd. The faces and folds of cloth are delicately shaded and the minutely detailed lines of gold carefully applied stylistically tying this printed leaf to the fully hand-painted Books of Hours that printed versions were slowly replacing during the early years of the 16th century. The composition seems to come from a suite of illustrations designed by illuminator Jean Pichore fl. 1490-1521 done for the printer Gilles also Gillet Hardouyn. Gilles Hardouyn (?) unknown

1920réf. 219786Circa1920s - 1930s. Collection of twenty-six loose photographs and five postcards two in colour. Photograph sizes vary but most are 10 x 14cm a few a bit smaller. The largest photograph measures 17.1 x 27.3cm and while silvered and torn with loss at the lower left corner is a lovely period piece showing a Japanese man driving an early 20th century car and an attractively dressed western-style Japanese woman looking on. In general the photographs show signs of wear some corner tears evidence of removal from albums or silvering but are still a fascinating collection showing people at home at work or on a day out. An interesting collection of photographs and postcards mostly black-and-white with a couple of coloured postcards. They appear to come from the family album of Japanese migrants to Hawaii or California. Most date from the 1920s and 1930s although one postcard was written during a visit to Paris in the 1950s. A few have dates on the back - the oldest being a photo of a smartly-dressed Japanese couple dated 1921 it is difficult to tell whether this was taken in Japan or the USA. Two photographs dated 1929 and 1931 show a Japanese woman with her small daughter - in one image she is shown with an Anglo-European family. There a studio photograph of a Japanese man holding serious-looking photographic equipment suggesting that at least one member of the family was a keen photographer. A particularly interesting shot shows the interior of a shop evidently run by the family selling a wide range of goods from electric fans cooking utensils baskets padlocks and other items. The family seems to have prospered quite well since several photos show outings in their car and a trip to Santa Cruz and the collection also includes a postcard from the famous Hotel Wawona in Yosemite National Park California. Another postwar postcard sent from Paris to the Tsuchiya family in Numazu describes a trip from Japan where the writer apparently stayed with the Tsuchiyas to France via Switzerland. . unknown

Finn mac Cumail or mac Umaill often anglicized Finn McCool or MacCool is a hero in Irish mythology as well as in later Scottish and Manx folklore. He is the leader of the Fianna bands of young roving hunter-warriors as well as being a seer and poet. He is said to have a magic thumb that bestows him with great wisdom. He is often depicted hunting with his hounds Bran and Sceólang and fighting with his spear and sword. Fionn MacCumhail was transformed into the character "Fingal" in James Macpherson's poem cycle Ossian 1760 which Macpherson claimed was translated out of discovered Ossianic poetry written in the Scottish Gaelic language. Fionn MacCumhail features heavily in modern Irish literature. Most notably he makes several appearances in James Joyce's Finnegans Wake 1939 and some have posited that the title taken from the street ballad "Finnegan's Wake" may also be a blend of "Finn again is awake" referring to his eventual awakening to defend Ireland. unknown
