1941réf. 030030Baltimore Maryland: Federal Bureau of Investigation 1941. Group includes: April 4 1941 Typed letter with printed signature of J.E. Hoover Director FBI on their letterhead regarding Jones' application form & procedures. April 22 1941 Western Union message sent to James W. Jones regarding an appointment to meet special Agent in Charge H.T. O'Connor for an examination to be held at room 800 Court Square Building. 3 page typed Federal Bureau of Investigation U.S. Dept. of Justice information for applicants for the positions of Special Agent and Special Agent Accountant. Undated. May 26 1941 Typed form signed by E.W. Chapin Inspector in Charge Federal Communications Commission Engineering Dept. Field Division sent to Jones regarding his successful examination result for a restricted radiotelephone operator permit taken at Baltimore MD. With the original mailing envelope printed FCC return address and canceled that day. Coincidentally and unverified our research indicates that a James Wormley Jones 1884 - 1958 had been the first African-American FBI special agent under the direct supervision of J. Edgar Hoover as an undercover operative; earlier J.W. Jones had been a police detective and a captain of infantry serving in the U.S. Army WWI. "… Eventually recognized as an ex-police officer Jones was no longer an asset as a clandestine agent and he resigned from the Bureau on April 14 1923." wiki Perhaps most famous of his investigations was acting as an undercover operative in the Marcus Garvey mail fraud case. The trail of document-cited information that is readily accessed online ends at that severance however - a gap of some 35 years till Jones' death which leads to speculation as to his later career. We have found a single reference to later employment in the Pittsburgh police department. Katherine Hafner Nov. 19 2019 The Virginian-Pilot There is a possibility that there may have been further FBI involvement on a contractual basis or for a specific category of investigation We also noticed that the message for the appointment for examination is specified at room 800. James W. Jones old FBI cover 'code' was as Agent 800; perhaps this is simply an odd coincidence; as is the coincidence of this Jones having the same name as a known former agent… And Jones is a common name and why would a veteran agent need an examination Perhaps for unknown reasons personnel requirements or…A mystery we now leave for the consideration of others far more knowledgeable in these matters.
