1820rif. List3998St. John New Brunswick 1820. 3 pp stampless folded letter measuring 7 x 9 inches to J. R. Parker at the Franklin Music Warehouse Boston with circular date stamp and manuscript postal markings. Folded with usual wear; very good. An 1820 letter from the Musical Academy at St. John New Brunswick to J. R. Parker at the Franklin Music Warehouse in Boston concerning subscriptions to Parker's Euterpeiad; or Musical Intelligencer the circulation of musical periodicals an order for the Masonick Minstrel and the submission of an epitaph for William Jackson of Exeter. The Euterpeiad was a Boston music periodical edited by John Rowe Parker and issued from 1820 to 1823; the Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals describes it as "the first true music periodical in the USA."1 It was devoted to musical information and belles lettres publishing criticism biography correspondence notices of musical societies and performances and discussion of new musical works and instruments. The writer first reports that he has secured four additional subscribers and asks Parker to send copies from the first of April then comments on the periodical's prospectus and its critical department: "Perhaps Mr. Ch. has obtained some more names. You will please consign him the Euterpeiad and he will of course consign you Cash. Criticism is a desirable division of your Prospectus. You may tell me to do anything to forward your views and I will feel happy in acceding." The second portion of the letter is addressed to the editors of the Euterpeiad submitting for publication the epitaph on the tombstone of William Jackson of Exeter the English composer organist writer and painter; the writer notes the epitaph's "elegant simplicity" and that "many of your highly respectable readers will consider it as a treat." The copied epitaph presents Jackson as a musician critic writer painter and man of letters: "In the Science of Music an Eminent Professor / Whose genius united elegant expression / Pure and Original Melody / With peculiar delicacy of Harmonic Combination / In Painting in Literature in every liberal study / That enlightens the Intellect or expands the . / His attainments were rare and distinguished . / A Writer novel and acute in observation. / A correct and discriminating Critic / Endeared to his select associates / By a conversation and demeanor / of Impressive and fascinating simplicity." The writer uses Jackson's epitaph to criticize literary pretension: "I wish that many of our Knights and Squires who assume a supercilious consequence would strive to deserve such an inscription. Men of real merit and genuine talent are always modest and attentive not like those presuming authors who are all title page and no contents". The writer also asks Parker to give the bearer Mr. Deering a copy of the Masonick Minstrel for his own use "for which he will pay you on delivery." A good early North American music and print-culture letter linking the Musical Academy at St. John Parker's Franklin Music Warehouse The Euterpeiad Masonic music subscriber networks and British music in the Atlantic world. 1 Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals "The Euterpeiad or Musical Intelligencer" accessed July 22 2026 https://ripm.org/journals/etp. . unknown

1860rif. 34086Green Street London: April 15 1860. 1860. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink filling most of both sides of a sheet of cream paper approximately 8 inches high by 6 inches wide bordered in black. The letter is tipped onto a slightly larger piece of card stock. Signed "Howard Douglas". There is a tiny chip to the left edge of the black border. Folded twice for mailing. Very good Howard Douglas writes to Colonel John St. George 1812-1891 Director of Ordnance at the War Office asking for the return of a drawing of a gun which he wants to include in his upcoming book "Treatise on Naval Gunnery" fifth edition revised published in 1860. "I am anxious for the return of the drawing which I sent to you of the Armstrong Naval Gun on its carriage. The omission would deprive my work of a good deal of interest.I have stopped the Press waiting for your reply". General Sir Howard Douglas 3rd Baronet 1776-1861 was a British military officer and Member of Parliament for Liverpool from 1842-1847. After entering the Royal Military Academy Woolwich he was commissioned Second Liutenant in the Royal Artillery in 1794 becoming Lieutenant a few months later. He served as Governor of New Brunswick from 1823-31 and had to deal with the Maine boundary dispute with the United States of 1828. He also founded Fredericton College now known as the University of New Brunswick and was its first Chancellor. From 1835 to 1840 he was Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands where he introduced a new code of laws known as "the Douglas code". The code infuriated the Greek Orthodox patriarchate in that it included innovations affecting family life especially marriage and divorce. Abused or abandoned women could more easily obtain a divorce. Further it legalized marriage between step-siblings and second cousins. Douglas was the author of several important military and naval treatises including the "Treatise on Naval Gunnery" of which the fifth edition is referred to in this letter. It became a standard text book and was the first publication to draw attention to its subject. Green Street [London]: April 15, 1860. unknown

Typed transcripts included. Light edgewear and soiling fold lines very good condition overall. $1000. A little more than a decade earlier Denman had been one of the lead counsel on the defence team of Queen Caroline and had been conspicuously brilliant thereon. Mrs. Impey appears to have been sufficiently entranced with the celebrity of the defence team more than a decade later that she showed interest in having relics examples of the hands of three of the main figures on the team: Thomas Denman 1779-1854 later Lord Chief Justice; Henry Brougham 1778-1868 later Lord Chancellor; and Sir John Williams 1777-1846 later Puisne Justice at the Court of King's Bench. This desire was answered in full by Lady Denman who provided examples of the hands for Mrs. Impey whereupon Impey carefully annotated the group with headnotes for posterity. This is possibly the earliest example to survive of an autograph hunter seeking specifically autographs of a legal defence team from any trial: we are not aware of an earlier instance. The trial was a landmark in legal history and this clutch of autographs may well be a landmark in the history of the collecting of legal manuscripts. unknown

1938[4], 5-254, [2], 8 [ads], pages. This portion of Carr's life story begins after his experience as a submariner in WWI. He serves as an officer of the Mercantile Marine and experiences incredible adventures and hardships before deciding to move his young family from England to New Brunswick. Times are tough in his new land. He describes the local poverty and exposes the awful social problems of rural New Brunswick, as well as his dramatic adventures at work, with a local trapper and as a member of the C.P.R. police. In short, Carr was a man's man and this book is full of manly adventures. Later in life, Carr [1895-1959] became very concerned about what he viewed as plans for world government and wrote Pawns in the Game and Red Fog Over America, books which sold by the hundreds of thousand. The present work is vital in understanding the background and motivations of this fascinating man. Above-average wear to publisher's black cloth. Binding intact. A charming album chronicling two deer hunting trips outfitted by Paradise Fish and Game Club in New Brunswick with Evan G. Ross as Guide for both. The owner of the album is presumed to be Ken Davis as indicated in an article included at the back of the album written by Florence E. Davis for Harding's Magazine titled 'Buck Fever.' Florence - or "Flo" as Ken lovingly refers to her in the album's captions - shot her first buck on the mixed party trip to Sisson Lake Camp in 1939 a year after Ken's first successful hunting trip with Evan Ross. "While we have enjoyed many fine hunting experiences since this trip will always have a particular significance in that it established beyond any question of doubt that there was a mutual love for the outdoors. No man could have a finer hunting partner." Many of the photographs contain cheeky captions - "Watchful Waiting!!!
