1791In 8° (19,5x12,5 cm); 127, (3) pp. Brossura coeva. Buon esemplare. Raro.

1788pp. xii, 403. 8vo. 205 mm. Original full leather binding. Spine quite worn and should be replaced or restored. Old bookplate of the Connecticut Historical Society (Released for Sale). Full Title: Considerations sur L'Ordre de Cincinnatus, ou Imitation D'un pamphlet Anglo-Americain. Suivies De plusieurs Pieces relatives a cette Institution; D'une Lettre signee du General Washington, accompagnee de Remarques par l'Auteur Francois; D'une Lettre de feu M. Turgot, Ministre d'Etat en France, au Docteur Price, sur les Legislations Americaines; & de la Traduction d'un Pamphlet du Docteur Price, intitule: Observations on the importance of the American Revolution, and the means of making it a benefit to the world; accompagnee de Reflexions & de Notes du Traducteur. Howes M 653. This is an enlarged edition of a work first published in 1784. It is based on a pamphlet entitled "Considerations on the Society or Order of Cincinnatus" issued in 1783 at Philadelphia. The original pamphlet was signed "Cassius" and is supposed to have been written by Edanus Burke (though some give Sebastien Roch Nicholas Chamfort as a joint author). The notes on Price's very important 'Observations' were largely the work of Guy Jean Baptiste Target (1733-1806). The hereditary and quasi-aristocratic character of the Revolutionary War veterans' Society of the Cincinnati was strongly opposed by Franklin and others. Franklin was unable, due to his sensitive political and diplomatic roles, to attack the organization directly. Apparently "he engaged two of his friends, Chamfort and the young Mirabeau, to translate an American attack upon the Society, Aedanus Burke's Considerations on the Society or Order of Cincinnatus, and to incorporate into the translation an essay in letter form that Franklin had himself written to his daughter, which demonstrated mathematically the absurdity and moral and social evil of aristocracy or "descending honor." Mirabeau's book, Considerations sur l'Ordre de Cincinnatus, published in London in 1784 through the efforts of Franklin and later translated into English, created a great furor, for it attacked an organization headed by such respectable figures as Washington, Lafayette, and Rochambeau, and at the same time struck, convincingly and cleverly, at the foundations of the existing French social order." - Echeverria, Mirage in the West, pp. 56-57). This enlarged edition includes a French translation of Price's book and Mirabeau's comments on it. It includes details which did not appear in the English version, and is an important document in the history of the Revolutionary War era. RARE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED FR-VOYAGES
1848pp. viii, (1), (15)-374, (30) [Publisher's illustrated catalogue]. Foxed. Manuscript ownership of Thomas? L. Speyers?, 1873. 1924 penciled comment that mentions American Civil War. 12mo. 200 mm. Original full cloth binding. Major loss at head of spine. Hardbound. Good. Honore-Gabriel de Riqueti, comte de Mirabeau (1749-1791) was a leader of the early stages of the French Revolution. A noble, he was involved in numerous scandals that had left his reputation in ruins, before the start of the Revolution (1789). Nonetheless, he rose to the top of the French political hierarchy. He acquired the reputation as the 'voice of the people.' The later discovery that he was in the pay of King Louis XVI and the Austrian enemies of France beginning in 1790 caused his posthumous disgrace. Historians are deeply split on whether he was a great leader who almost saved the nation from the Terror, a venal demagogue lacking political or moral values, or a traitor in the pay of the enemy. The first three parts constituting L'Ami des Hommes were first published by Mirabeau in 1756 before his meeting with Quesnay and his conversion to the physiocratic theses. In 1758 the work was reissued as a new edition with a fourth part added and in 1760 the fifth and sixth parts. Thus the present edition is the first complete one. Notably the final volume of the work includes Quesnay's Tableau Economique the first work attempting to describe the workings of the economy in an analytical way. Portions of Quesnay's work had been privately printed in a few copies only at the palace at Versailles in 1758 and 1759 but is here more widely and fully published. A work of fundamental importance whose appearance created a sensation throughout Europe was widely translated and reprinted and earned its author an international reputation "greater than that of any other economist before or after not excluding Adam Smith or Karl Marx." Schumpeter p. 175n Mirabeau argues that wealth is the product of population -- in particular agriculture -- and that a large populartion is desirable that religious toleration free enterprise a more equitable system of taxation and distribution of wealth were necessary components of a vital economy. The first three parts appeared in 1756; by 1758 Mirabeau had fallen under the influence of Quesnay and issued the fourth part in which the latter's influence is very much felt. The two between them it may be said founded the school of the physiocrats. A fifth and sixth part were added in 1760. Kress 5735; Higgs 1631; Goldsmith 9317 unknown books

First edition 8vo pp. iv 192; title-page vignette 2 cupids; bound in modern dark brown morocco gilt a.e.g. by Wood; light wear a few contemporary manuscript notes fine. A compendium of curiosities culled from ancient writings in an effort to present indelicate subjects such as onanism tribalism etc. in a manner acceptable to the general public. Written while Mirabeau was imprisoned in the castle of Vincennes the book was according to Kearney pursued with such vigor by the authorities that only fourteen copies of the first edition have survived - a number almost assuredly inaccurate. Following a second edition of 1792 Errotika was included in the Papal Index of prohibited books. "A further edition was ordered to be destroyed in 1826 by the Royal Court of Paris and for 'outrages against public morality and good manners' there were two other prosecutions in 1856 and 1868" Kearney. The book was published in several subsequent editions and was included by Apollinaire along with some of Mirabeau's other prison writings in his scholarly edition of 1910 issued in the Bibliotheque des Curieux series. This volume contains the complete issues 1 and 2 of Mirabeau's famous revolutionary newspaper Journal des États-Généraux published right at the start of the Estates-General in early May 1789 along with all nineteen Lettres de comte de Mirabeau à ses commettans. Originally published as a direct commentary by the Count of Mirabeau on the happenings of the Estates-General the Royal Council officially banned his Journal on May 7 1789. To circumvent the ban Mirabeau rebranded his publication as direct "letters" to the constituents in Provence who elected him to the Third Estate. Since deputies had a legal right to report back to their electors the royal censors could not easily stop him. 1418440. Special Collections - Upstairs. unknown books
