Five leaves sized from 12 x 22 in. up to 22.75 x 28 in. 1st. - Pencil manuscript on hand-ruled graph chart w/ boxes all filled in some additions on thick yellow paper stock two pieces taped together on verso; 2nd - Original typescript w/ some corrections made on typing paper two pieces taped on verso minor tear creasing; 3rd -- Blueprint from typescript; 4 & 5 both typescript copies on thin typing paper couple minor closed tears still VG set. Original manuscript and typescript tables prepared by Golder 1877-1929 for early lectures on Russian economic and diplomatic history and “A Survey of Alaska 1743-1799” 1913. Published in the Washington Historical Quarterly these charts trace the growth and economic impact of the Russian fur trade from the 18th Century into the 19th Century. At the time Golder was unable to find one single source of the information so he created his own charts and they chronicle the growth and impact of the fur trade in Alaska breaking down not only all the vessels navigators and owners but also the types of cargo including beaver fox sea otter otter tails sea bears sea lions whale mustaches walrus tusks blue arctic fox and their values. The two additional typescript tables separate out the furs from the Chelichof and Golikofs Co. i.e. Shelikhov-Golikov Co. from 1786-1797 notorious for their massacres of indigenous Alutiiqs in 1784 on Kodiak Island known as the Awa’uq Massacre allowing the Russian Co. control over the island. Directly afterwards Golder spent the next decade actively working in Russian Archives during the Russian Revolution and eventually produced his Guide to Materials for American History in Russian Archives and built the massive Slavic language collection at the Hoover War History Collection. 1853ref. BK0069Glasgow Scotland 1853. Autograph letter signed for John & Robert Tennent by G. R. Tennent to D. Gibb & Co. San Francisco. Received by the steamer Winfield Scott September 20 1853. 1 p. 8 ½ x 10 ½ inches. Light wear; very good. A Gold Rush commercial letter documenting the movement and valuation of California gold within the transatlantic financial system. Writing from Glasgow to the San Francisco firm of D. Gibb & Co. John & Robert Tennent acknowledge a remittance of gold dust valued at $5092 and explain why the transaction produced a poorer return than a conventional bill of exchange. The specie had been sold in London for £1001 12s. 6d. The firm then added sixty days' interest and deducted marine insurance in order to compare the net proceeds with the value of a draft. Their calculation left a balance of £15 18s. 6d. in their favor which they instructed the California merchants to include in their next remittance: "Referring to your remittance of gold dust we regret to inform you that as it was unauthorized on our part we presume that you cannot object to our placing the proceeds to your Credit under deduction of the difference between such proceeds and a remittance by Bill." The letter also records £174 9s. 7d. in freight payable at San Francisco on goods shipped aboard the Kate and refers to an enclosed summary of exports sent to California during the month of July. A concise but useful account of the practical economics of Gold Rush remittances showing the comparison between specie and bills of exchange together with the costs of interest insurance freight and transatlantic shipment. . unknown

1925ref. 7016Milwaukee: the company 1925. Trade catalogue bound with three brass fasteners 28 x 22.5 cm. forty-two original color-printed cellophane or polyethylene food wrappers mostly for meat bacon or sausage or candy products. Brand names and designs vary greatly. Some of the samples bare the Milprint Protecto-Pack or Millprint Econo-Wrap slug. "Milprint Inc. was founded by the brothers Max T. "Popsy" Heller and William "Billy" Heller as the Milwaukee Printing Company in 1899. Beginning in 1908 they succeeded in developing printing techniques for flexible media used in commercial packaging at first glassine paper and then cellophane foil and polyethylene. The Heller brothers were able to get in at the beginnings of the mass marketing of consumer goods when individually sealed wrappings implied safety and purity. Their paper wrappings practically made the individual nickel candy bar possible and the firm dominated the candy wrapper market at an early date. Its in-house artists and designers advised clients on the most effective way to package their products. The Heller brothers also developed "Trans-Vision" a means of depicting complex objects in peel-away layers on transparent film whose most common use was probably depicting the anatomy of the human body in textbooks. William Heller sold Milprint to Philip Morris Incorporated in 1957" Hagley Museum Finding aid for the Leonard Walton collection of Milprint materials. 1896ref. 4969New York: Bartlett & Company The Orr Press 1896. Octavo 20.5 x 14 cm. 97 pages. Date derived from Water Street address on title page. An extensively illustrated trade catalogue of heating furnaces and cooking ranges. Before the 1830s gravity hot-air furnaces were produced according to the specifications of individual buildings. The first mass-market manufacturer in the United States was Richardson & Boynton established in 1837 and in business for more than a century thereafter. The company survived the competitive surge in home heating manufacturers in the decades after the Civil War Fuller & Warren of Troy for instance also advertised as "the oldest house in the trade" introducing innovations in fuel source efficiency flue design cleaning access and model size – to say nothing of aesthetic appeal – at a surprising rate. The foundries and shop buildings occupied a double block in Red Hook Brooklyn; corporate offices 232-234-236 Water Street were across the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan. By the 1890s Richardson & Boynton were advertising themselves as manufacturers of multiple designs of furnaces fireplace heaters laundry water heaters cooking ranges stoves and kitchen appurtenances such as kettles urns pastry ovens and steam tables. Owing ostensibly to climbing tunnage and wharfage costs the entire operation decamped to Dover New Jersey in February 1896. Elaborate illustrations with equally elaborate cutaways; specification charts. A bit of chipping to head and foot of wrapper at spine otherwise very good in two-toned brown wrappers with gilt decoration. Pages clean and bright. Scarce. OCLC locates three copies of all other Richardson & Boynton cataloguesbut none of this issue; Romaine page 363 for other issues. Bartlett & Company, The Orr Press unknown

1887ref. 31477New York Jan. 8 1887. 1887. Very good. - Over 75 words penned on both sides of an 8 inch high by 5 inch wide sheet of A.A. Low's personal 31 Burling Slip buff white stationery with attached blank leaf. In his letter addressed to Mr. Davenport at the Garfield Building which was also one of the buildings which A.A. Low developed in Brooklyn Low mentions the possibility of naming the building located at 186 Remsen Street which would house the Franklin Trust Company after that institution: "I have asked Mr. ____ if it would suit him or it will not to have the edifice called 'The Franklin Building'". Signed "Respectfully yours A.A. Low". Folded for mailing with some minor creases to the left edge. Remnants of paper adhere to the edge of the verso of the blank leaf. Very good. The American entrepreneur businessman and philanthropist Abiel Abbot Low 1811-1893 made his fortune from the China trade. His company A.A. Low & Brothers imported teas porcelain and silks from China and Japan. His firm was originally housed on Fletcher Street in New York City. It moved to new quarters the A.A. Low building which he erected on John street in 1849-50. Once established in New York Low went on to invest in numerous other ventures including the first Atlantic cable and the Nickel Plate Railroad. Among A.A. Low's speculative investments were the Garfield Building as well as financial institutions such as the Dime Savings Bank and the Title Guarantee & Trust Company. Another of his projects the Franklin Building is a seven and a half story Romanesque Revival Building.
