1978ref. 41341London: Rough Trade 1978. Very good plus. Flyer promoting the second date at Manchester's famed Factory of Stiff Little Finger's UK tour after the surprise success of their first album - an interesting document in the development of one of the most important indie record labels. Rough Trade who issued this flyer began as a London record shop and soon expanded to tour promotion and music releases under their own imprint. Yet it wasn't until the unexpected success of Stiff Little Finger's first album INFLAMMABLE MATERIAL it debuted at #14 on the UK charts on Feb. 3rd 1979 that Rough Trade was truly established as a force in the UK music scene. Also on the bill are Robert Rental Essential Logic and Daniel Miller's The Normal. Miller would use his experience at Rough Trade to later launch Mute Records another key UK post-punk indie. 8.25'' x 12''. Offset flyer printed black on red recto only. Mild wear at edges. In black marker a contemporary hand has added: "Factory / Feb 16th.". Rough Trade unknown
1930ref. 42850Leicester UK: Cascelloid 1930. Very good . Beautifully-produced trade catalogue from the Cascelloid "Palitoy" company displaying a wide range of baby dolls and other toys. Several uncomfortable designs of black children with pitch-dark skin date this catalogue at roughly the 1930s when the Cascelloid company was dubbed the "House of Constant Progress" by the industry press for its material innovations with the plastics Bexoid and Plastex. One page features a celluoid model by the noted designer Mary Lucie Attwell a doll named "Diddums." The catalogue also displays the company's offerings of animal dolls die-cast trucks pool toys golf and ping-pong sets rattles pinwheels and more. Needless to say color photography was not the norm at this time and this catalogue comprises a beautiful set of vivid and sharp photographic prints. A truly exceptional example unlike anything we've seen: simultaneously surreal and nostalgic. Oblong 4to. album. Blue leather-covered boards. Contains 29 color photographs all 9" by 6.5" approx. mounted on rectos one each of light-gray cardboard leaves. About very good plus overall. Moderate rubbing and edgewear to boards. Several pages display mild soiling and offsetting from photos. Prints just a bit yellowed but remain sharp vivid and clean. [Cascelloid] unknown
ref. 146921The collection comprises: 1 A ring-bound folder containing nearly 100 designs for cap and blazer badges including 40 with mounted examples of the finished embroidered patches. The designs are full-scale pencil drawings some coloured and most with typed or manuscript details of the colours designs and materials e.g. 'Royal Blue Cap. Badge worked all gold'. Badges for schools predominate with some of the wealthier private schools calling for multiple designs. For instance St Peters College has different designs for: Colours Junior Second First and First for prefects tennis cap regular and for prefects house and school prefects rowing cap regular and for prefects and old scholars. Also well represented are sporting clubs mainly baseball and cricket including the South Australian Cricket Association as well as a small number of youth clubs fraternities and other societies. The mount leaves are pulled at the punched holes and a little stained and torn; one leaf is defective; overall an impressive and extraordinary collection. 2 Approximately 300 hand-cut stencils paper or card used to transfer designs to the fabric where they would then be worked over by skilled embroiderers using free-motion or 'Irish' embroidery machines. The stencils include many designs not in the sample book including company logos and many other school and association badges. Of particular note are several relating to the Australian military forces in the Second World War including two for a Royal Australian Air Force pilot's wings one pricked for pouncing one a cut stencil one for what appears to be a torpedoman's shoulder patch and one for the Red Cross Transport Service. Some are dated with the earliest noted being for the West Torrens Cricket Club South Australian Cricket Association premiers 1932-33; the latest date noted is 1940. Companies represented include General Motors-Holden GM-H Amscol Mastakraft itself Howells Electric Motors Amalgamated Airways and the Simson's Electric Light Company Cricket Club. 1939ref. 107714Melbourne: Ramsay Standard Catalogue Service 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Melbourne Ramsay Standard Catalogue Service 1939. Large quarto upwards of 1000 pages with many hundreds of illustrations some in colour as well as hundreds of paint samples - from the likes of Rogers Berger Sherwin-Williams Ricksha Balm and Wesco - mounted on 23 leaves versos blank. Stone-textured brown cloth printed and decorated in red and black; extremities slightly rubbed; four sheets of paint samples are adhering to varying degrees to the blank versos of adjacent leaves; notwithstanding an excellent copy. Number 2682 of an unspecified print run. 'The 1939 edition of Ramsay's Catalogue eclipses all previous records. Never in the history of the building industry in Australia has a publication of this size and importance been attempted much less achieved and we are justly proud of its appearance' introductory note. An article in 'The Argus' Thursday 13 June 1939 announced that the work 'has just been published'; never in the history of the building industry in Australia was there a worse time to launch such an ambitious project than the eve of the Second World War! The article continues: 'The catalogue is not sold to the public but is issued to architects' offices throughout Australia'. The complete and long-term disruption to the industries featured in this catalogue must go a long way towards explaining why this wonderful time-capsule is very scarce we locate only three copies in Trove. The next edition of the catalogue was not published until 1947. Ramsay Standard Catalogue Service hardcover

1883ref. 174897London: Harrison & Sons 1883. A single copy traced institutionally First edition of this valuable collection of official papers over half of which concerns Admiralty patrols and slavery cases in the Zanzibar region. Many items of correspondence were sent by or to the influential Arabist Samuel Barrett Miles 1838-1914 the political agent and consul-general. Records show only the British Library's copy. For Britain curtailing the slave trade in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea was a means to consolidate control over the region. In 1873 it signed anti-slaving treaties with the Sultan of Muscat and after blockading Zanzibar Sultan Barghash bin Said al-Busaidi r. 1870-88. Throughout the 1870s the Admiralty bolstered its naval presence. Textual and statistical memoranda from Miles and others reported encounters by patrolling vessels with slaving dhows and fugitive slaves the seizure and destruction of vessels and legal proceedings. An important moment was the lethal encounter in December 1881 of HMS London with a dhow flying French colours. As related by Rear-Admiral Gore Jones Commander-in-Chief East Indies Station to the Secretary of the Admiralty "no one on London was expecting action and all were personally unarmed. The Arabs instantly fired and then rushed on board." London's captain Charles Brownrigg "fought like a lion" but was fatally stabbed through the heart pp. 188-9. The incident hardened British resolve; in the late 19th century slavers were increasingly forced to seek overland rather than maritime routes. The compilation also includes two documents concerning Persia a report of a man who had escaped from slavery in Mecca and a short despatch on the sentencing of a slaver submitted by Lynedoch Needham Moncrieff the acting British consul at Jeddah. Folio. Tables in text. Original blue wrappers spine and covers lettered in black. Losses at spine ends a few chips and light stains to covers contents clean: very good. The Caution to Bankers is a manifesto-handbook by one of the earliest trade protection societies in Britain. The bankruptcy system and its potential for exploitation was a key concern of the Friends who complain in the Caution of its lack of subtlety and the opportunities it provided for dishonest figures to "take the benefit of the insolvent and bankrupt laws easily arrange matters for making all appear fair and just when they come to be examined by the Judges and Commissioners" p. 31. Vizard together with Brougham as Lord Chancellor was in 1831 engaged on the long-anticipated project of removing bankruptcy from the jurisdiction of chancery and of establishing dedicated bankruptcy courts. A beverage of empire - the demise of the Chinese tea monopoly First edition covering material submitted by East India Company representatives between 1834 and 1838 - a crucial period during which Britain laid the foundations of its tea empire in Assam. The documents concern the key actors in the growth of Britain's formal tea empire including Jenkins the powerful Bengal civil servant William Hay Macnaghten and the members of the Tea Committee established by Governor William Bentinck in 1834. Pages 36-37 carry the text of the committee's momentous 24 December 1834 report announcing that the tea plant was indigenous to Assam: "We have no hesitation in declaring this discovery. to be by far the most important and valuable that has ever been made on matters connected with the agricultural or commercial resources of this empire."
