ref. 103307No place no date c. 1870. Single sheet c. 115 x 75 cm red plastic/parkesine with gilt titling and gilt illustrations of a tealeaf. some very light damage to the lower margin. This extremely unusual trade card for the firm of E. Brandsma in Amsterdam dealers in tea seems to be a VERY EARLY EXAMPLE OF TRANSLUCENT PLASTIC. Alexander Parkes developed a product the first thermoplastic in the 1850's by treating cellulose with nitric acid to form a transparent and elastic material know then as Parkesine. Parkesine was patented in 1856 and unveiled at the 1862 Great Exhibition. Parkes attempted to develop it commercially but failed due to the high cost and general production difficulties. It was usually produced in rectangular plaques such as here.
1892ref. 18107France 1892. Very good condition. Trade card for the most successful cigarette merchant in Egypt Nestor Gianaclis named after the man who founded the Egyptian cigarette industry in 1871 when he set up a factory in the Khairy Pasha palace in Cairo. Gianaclis' cigarettes made with imported Turkish tobacco became so popular with the British officers stationed in Egypt that the company began exporting to the UK and eventually to Europe and the US. With gilt text and gilt highlighted chromolithographic illustrations of 9 medals Bruxelles 1891; Paris Calcutta Toulon and two crests De S. A. le Khedive d'Egypte at the left and at the right "Et de la Cour de S. A. le Prince Heritier de Grece. 2 7/8 x 1 1/2 unknown
ref. 76847N.p.: N.p. ca. `975. Presumed first edition. Oblong quarto 11 1/8 x 8 inches. 29 leaves paginated with no gaps and printed on rectos only bearing 466 patterns. No title page but nonetheless a remarkable display of Victorian hair jewelry. Most often used to connote mourning but were used for other purposes as well. Extremely popular in the mid to late 19th century and then all but forgotten. Front blank with old two-inch cellotape repair to leaf 8. Contemporary sand-grain blue cloth with blind stamped borders but no lettering. A bit loose in the binding. Hair jewelry catalogs seldom come up.Hair was fashioned into a piece that was braided woven or otherwise worked into a form and a design. Brooches bracelets earrings watch fobs and rings could be made from hair. While it is impossible to declare with any certainty we find in the catalog of hair jewelry by Charles T. Menge of New York ca. 1875 exactly the same twining borders and two pieces that are a definite match. Of course copying was probably rampant then but an interesting tidbit nonetheless as this would make it an American company rather than a British one. N.p. hardcover
