1908ref. 22238St. Petersburg Fla.: Board of Trade 1908. Good/No Dust Jacket As Issued. LONG BEFORE THE LAND BOOM ST. PETERSBURG WAS ALREADY MARKETING PARADISE. An apparently unrecorded visually spectacular promotional folder championing St. Petersburg Florida as the premier climatic sanctuary of the American South. Printed in striking black and vibrant orange this double-sided folding sheet highlights local business blocks public spaces and the famed Pinellas Peninsula climate anchored by an impressive ten and a half inch wide panoramic view of the waterfront and steamships. It represents an exceptional early primary source document of municipal branding from the dawn of the Florida land boom. KEY FEATURES: Broadside / Folding Pamphlet. Visuals: Features 27 photographic views showcasing local residences business blocks brick streets churches and agricultural specimens dominated by a large 10.5-inch wide central panoramic view of St. Petersburg by the Gulf Stream on the reverse side. Binding: Single large sheet folded vertically and horizontally into panels. Content: Extensive promotional texts praising the local climate agricultural yields sea-food availability and civic infrastructure with formal endorsements from regional medical authorities and local developers. Imprint: Board of Trade St. Petersburg Fla. 1908. First Edition. Specs: 35.5 by 32 cm approximately 14 by 12.5 inches when flat / Double-sided single sheet. CONDITION: Very Good. The paper remains clean and bright with the orange and black inks exceptionally bold and free of fading. There is minor wear along the original fold lines including a few tiny splits at the intersections which have been stabilized with neat archival repairs on the blank margins of the reverse side. A well-preserved crisp example of a highly vulnerable ephemeral format. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: FROM FISHING VILLAGE TO DESTINATION- The St. Petersburg Board of Trade acting as the primary civic engine of the Pinellas Peninsula designed this folding broadside to actively combat Northern winters by targeting affluent tourists and retirees. By utilizing the recently coined 'Sunshine City' trademark local boosters established a potent visual and textual vocabulary that defined regional promotional efforts for the next half-century. This specific piece is highly significant because it records the city's physical and cultural landscape just prior to the massive population boom of the 1910s. The inclusion of photographic evidence documenting 'Brick and Concrete' business blocks alongside rural moss-draped hammocks illustrates a calculated dual appeal to industrial modernization and pristine natural paradise. The promotional rhetoric surrounding the 'frostless' peninsula directly contributed to the massive land speculation and demographic shift that permanently transformed southwest Florida from an isolated sub-tropical frontier into a central hub of American leisure. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS Municipal Branding & Development - Documents the early adoption of the 'Sunshine City' identity by the St. Petersburg Board of Trade illustrating how civic promotion helped shape the city's public image. Agricultural History - Rich visual and textual evidence of early citrus cultivation tropical fruit production and commercial agriculture on the Pinellas Peninsula. Urban Growth & Infrastructure - Photographic views of brick business blocks paved streets public buildings and waterfront development immediately preceding the Florida land boom. ref. 20365Published by A. Wheaton & Co. Booksellers Fore Street Exeter. 1893. 16pp. 8vo. Stapled pamphlet. Aged and worn with all text intact. Dedicated 'To Nathaniel Lewis Cohen Esq. Founder of the First Free Labour Registry in England.' The text begins: 'A National Labour Bureau with Affiliated Labour Registries Is one of the pressing needs of the time. Therefore at the desire of two or three gentlemen who are greatly interested in the question I having given considerable attention to the matter venture to express my views thereon and at the same time to incorporate in a pamphlet the evidence I gave upon the subject before the Royal Commission on Labour in December last. In the views herein expressed I do not claim any special originality as they are very much the result of conference and correspondence with a number of representative men. My part has been first the initiation of the proposal to bring the subject under the notice of the Royal Commission; and secondly the formulation of a definite scheme.' What follows is divided into sections: 'Statement before Commission' 'Examination by Members of Commission' 'National Bureau' 'Cost of Scheme' 'Periodic Report' 'Employment of Post Offices' 'Private Registries' 'Importance of Prompt Action'. The final page is headed: 'Outline of Proposed Scheme.' This begins: 'A National Labour Bureau being an extension of the Labour Department of the Board of Trade or a separate department in affiliation with the Factory Inspectors' Department and with the Emigrations' Information Department in connection with which it should be vested with special powers for dealing with the questions of emigrations. The objects of this Bureau would be first to obtain and disseminate information on labour questions and general statistics of employment and secondly to act as a clearing house for the District Labour Bureaus.' Scarce: the only copies on OCLC WorldCat and COPAC at the Bishopsgate Library and the University of Essex Albert Sloman Library. Accompanying the item are a couple of newspaper cuttings neither complete one headed: 'A Labour Department Adoption by the Cabinet Outline of the Scheme'. Published by A.
