1937ref. 2527Nashville TN: The Chamber of Commerce Nashville TN 1937. First Edition First Printing. Original wraps. Good . 9 X 11 1/4 Inches. 62 PP Folding Map. Original February 5 1937 Portfolio created by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce. A fairly incredible "time-capsule" glance and 20th Century Nashville in the making. This unique book was created specifically for the purpose of garnering the business of the Norvell & Wallace Lumber factory. We assume that other similar copies were created on an individual basis when the city saw fit to "scout" major companies for the area. We have located "0" copies on OCLC and "0" auction records. The summary states "The principal advantages Nashville offers to industry and other lines of business is summarized from this survey." The index includes: agricultural resources altitude area assessed valuation building and construction city government civic and social data building permits churches civic-fraternal and welfare organizations education golf courses hospitals and medical facilities hotels newspapers office buildings parks and playgrounds Parthenon postal receipts public buildings radio stations streets theatres Tennessee State Fair climate financial instituions living conditions location manufacturing attitude toward new industries industrial development in Nashville Labor costs Labor relations Labor Laws and Regulations Labor Supply Workmen's Compensation Law markets mineral resources population public utilities state and local taxes transportation facilities airlines express freight local passenger service interurban service motor truck railroads river transportation vital statistics wholesale and retail establishments. A few of the stats that immediately jumped out at me - 1 The report predates any television station in Nashville 2 When polling races in the city the report denotes 111025 white citizens 42836 negro citizens and 5 of "other" races 3 only two airlines American and Eastern service the city and the municipal airport was dedicated only a few months before this report. 21 tables and graphs including rail distance and hours by train to other US cities flying hours from Nashville power rates gainful workers condition of the banks of Nashville and more. The folding map mounted at rear measures roughly 25 X 30 inches. Origianl stab binding intact. Pages and text clean. Covers are separated from the text. The map does exhibit a few closed tears and a bit of wear at folds. The Chamber of Commerce (Nashville, TN) unknown

Separate sheet "Today's Racing Entries Friday September Fourth laid in loose. -- No notable defects. -- Overall Condition. "The National Air Races also known as Pulitzer Trophy Races are a series of pylon and cross-country races that have taken place in the United States since 1920. The science of aviation and the speed and reliability of aircraft and engines grew rapidly during this period; the National Air Races were both a proving ground and showcase for this. -- In 1920 publisher Ralph Pulitzer sponsored the Pulitzer Trophy Race and the Pulitzer Speed Trophy for military airplanes at Roosevelt Field Long Island New York in an effort to publicize aviation and his newspaper. The races eventually moved to Cleveland in 1929 where they were known as the Cleveland National Air Races.2 They drew the best flyers of the time including James Doolittle Wiley Post Tex Rankin Frank Hawks Jimmy Wedell Roscoe Turner and others from the pioneer age of aviation. These air races helped to inspire Donald Blakeslee as a young boy. Other races included in the U.S. National Air Races were the Mitchell Trophy Race the Town & Country Club Race for civilians the Kansas City Rotary Club Trophy "for all three military services" and the Glenn Curtiss Trophy Race for "biplanes with engines having less than 510 cubic inches. Starting in 1929 the races usually ran for up to 10 days usually from late August to early September to include Labor Day. Aviation promoter Cliff Henderson was managing director of the National Air Races from 1928 to 1939. During World War II the races were on hiatus. The races included a variety of events including cross-country races originating in Portland Oakland and Los Angeles with a final destination in Cleveland.4: 79-81 Also included were landing contests glider demonstrations airship flights and parachute-jumping contests. The more popular events were the Thompson Trophy Races which started in 1929; a closed-course race where aviators raced their planes around pylons; and the Bendix Trophy Race the "transcontinental air race" across most of the USA starting in 1931. In 1929 a Santa Monica California to Cleveland Ohio route was started for the Women's Air Derby nicknamed the "Powder Puff Derby" featuring well-known female pilots such as Amelia Earhart Pancho Barnes Bobbi Trout and Louise Thaden. Thaden was the winner in the heavy Class D engines with 510-810 cubic inches 8400-13300 cm3 while Phoebe Omlie won the light Class C engines with 275-510 cubic inches 4510-8360 cm3. This was also the year for the first female pylon race the winner of which was awarded the Aerol Trophy beginning in 1931".-wikipedia. unknown

1866ref. BK0123Smyrna Turkey 1866. Autograph commercial letter signed by Cousinery & Fils to Lanman & Kemp New York. Stampless folded letter carried by the Messageries Maritimes steamer Volga departing Smyrna November 9 and arriving at Marseille November 14. Blue oval Cousinery & Fils handstamp and circular "MARSEILLE À LYON" traveling-post-office transit mark dated November 16 on the reverse; black circular "NEW YORK / 45 / DEC / 61 / NOTES" December 3 arrival marking on the front assessing forty-five cents in depreciated United States notes equivalent to the thirty-cent gold rate; manuscript "18" debit marking also apparently miscalculated. 1 pp. 8 x 10 ¼ inches. Old folds; light wear; fine to very fine. A commercial letter documenting the export of Ottoman opium from Smyrna to the United States. Cousinery & Fils confirm the purchase and shipment of five cases for the New York drug firm Lanman & Kemp invoiced at 84360 piastres and balanced through a £671 draft on London. The merchants describe the Smyrna opium market as being in a "state of dullness" with little demand and only limited sales of old and new drugs. They nevertheless report rumors that a Dutch company had ordered another 150 baskets which might strengthen prices. Responding to instructions from New York they agree to suspend purchases for one month and cancel two intended November shipments. A memorandum on the reverse records recent shipments aboard the steamers Sardis and Sidore and calculates a total of 380 cases of opium sent to the United States during 1866. A concise record of the nineteenth-century opium trade connecting Ottoman producers European financial intermediaries and the American pharmaceutical market. . unknown
1853ref. BK0069Glasgow Scotland 1853. Autograph letter signed for John & Robert Tennent by G. R. Tennent to D. Gibb & Co. San Francisco. Received by the steamer Winfield Scott September 20 1853. 1 p. 8 ½ x 10 ½ inches. Light wear; very good. A Gold Rush commercial letter documenting the movement and valuation of California gold within the transatlantic financial system. Writing from Glasgow to the San Francisco firm of D. Gibb & Co. John & Robert Tennent acknowledge a remittance of gold dust valued at $5092 and explain why the transaction produced a poorer return than a conventional bill of exchange. The specie had been sold in London for £1001 12s. 6d. The firm then added sixty days' interest and deducted marine insurance in order to compare the net proceeds with the value of a draft. Their calculation left a balance of £15 18s. 6d. in their favor which they instructed the California merchants to include in their next remittance: "Referring to your remittance of gold dust we regret to inform you that as it was unauthorized on our part we presume that you cannot object to our placing the proceeds to your Credit under deduction of the difference between such proceeds and a remittance by Bill." The letter also records £174 9s. 7d. in freight payable at San Francisco on goods shipped aboard the Kate and refers to an enclosed summary of exports sent to California during the month of July. A concise but useful account of the practical economics of Gold Rush remittances showing the comparison between specie and bills of exchange together with the costs of interest insurance freight and transatlantic shipment. . unknown
