A report on the second of two special censuses of mental institutions in the United States the first having been conducted in 1904. Previously the Census Bureau had tracked rates of insanity among the general population only as part of the regular decennial censuses. The 1910 special census surveyed 366 institutions collectively holding 248560 inmates. Joseph A. Hill's report analyzes a multitude of demographics including sex age race literacy marital status state region urban vs. rural etc. Another factor considered was nativity. The inclusion of this question on the survey reflected in part contemporary nativist fears that immigrants were increasing the percentage of mentally ill in the United States although Hill's report refutes this supposition. Mary F. Griffin and Louis C. Taylor contribute a "Summary of Laws Relative to the Care of the Insane" pp. 64-105. The census of 1910 reflected a growing sophistication in analyzing statistical data. The claim that insanity was increasing rapidly Hill noted was dubious. A variety of determinants shaped the statistics of insanity he insisted including the growing practices of institutionalizing the insane; the increasing average length of life; new diagnostic methods in psychiatry leading to the detection of mental factors in physical cases; the establishment of dispensaries; provision for voluntary and emergency commitment; and better modes of transportation i.e. automobiles that made it possible to bring individuals in poor physical condition to mental hospitals. By correcting for the age distribution of the entire native and foreign-born population Hill also demonstrated that the allegation that immigrants had far higher rates of mental illness was in error. --Gerald N. Grob The Origins of American Psychiatric Epidemiology p. 232 in A.J.P.H. 1985. The general statistical tables for this volume were published separately the previous year without any of the explanatory text illustrations or additional tables present here. 1840réf. 3417Through Russian Waters RUSSIA - TRADE FORMS. Vice Consolato di Russia. Manifesti cominciando dal 1840. Trapani 1840-49. Small folio pp. 196 of pre-printed shipping manifest forms of which 137 completed in ink; contemporary flexible vellum-backed marbled paper boards with ink-lettered label to upper board; corners bumped and spine a little chipped. Fine documentation of the maritime trade from the harbour of Trapani in Sicily. The manifest gives bills of lading from January 1840 to March 1849. The pre-printed manifests are completed in ink giving the name of the freight ship and its captain the destination and then details of its freight i.e. type and quantity of merchandise names of senders and recipients. Trapani boasts some of Europe's oldest salt marshes and salt extraction has been a major business for centuries which still flourishes to the present day. By the nineteenth century Sicilian sea salt was exported to European countries as far away as Norway and Russia. These shipping manifests document that it was sent to destinations as far afield as Constantinople Abo Stavanger Carlscrona Stockholm Bergen Odessa Reval and Riga. Clearly some of the shippers acted on their own account being both captains of the ship and shipper whereas others acted on commission. The shipping routes went through Russian waters which explains the accounts kept by the Russian Vice Consulate.

1932réf. 14372Los Angeles: Clason Map Co. 1932. 710 by 554mm. 28 by 21.75 inches. Folding lithographed map and text printed on recto and verso of a single sheet. A tourist's map and guide to the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic games. Los Angeles was the host city for the tenth Olympic games held from July 30th to August 14th 1932. Due to the Great Depression the LA Olympics were held on a shoestring budget. This unfortunate fact as well as California's relative remoteness caused these games to have the lowest athlete participation since 1904. Despite these hurdles the standard of competition at the games was excellent and it was an extremely innovative Olympics. For example the duration of the games was shortened from over 79 days to only 16 days the male athletes were all housed together in the first ever Olympic Village the podium was used during medal ceremonies for the first time there was record attendance and it was the first time that the Olympics had actually been profitable for its host city. As a result of these games Los Angeles became internationally known for the first time for reasons other than Hollywood's film industry thereby cementing its longstanding reputation as America's major West-Coast city. As a result of the Great Depression Los Angeles was forced to use mostly preexisting stadiums for the events though they changed their names temporarily and in some cases modified or renovated them. The only newly built stadium was the Coliseum here called the Los Angeles Olympic Stadium which astounded visitors with its immense size. This pamphlet intended for use by visitors to the games includes a detailed map of the city as well as information about the history of Los Angeles its landmarks museums parks stadiums public transportation and of course the times venues and ticket prices for all the Olympic events. We can only trace two examples in institutional collections U.C. Berkley Stanford and one example to have appeared at auction. Clason Map Co., unknown
