1840réf. 3417Through Russian Waters RUSSIA - TRADE FORMS. Vice Consolato di Russia. Manifesti cominciando dal 1840. Trapani 1840-49. Small folio pp. 196 of pre-printed shipping manifest forms of which 137 completed in ink; contemporary flexible vellum-backed marbled paper boards with ink-lettered label to upper board; corners bumped and spine a little chipped. Fine documentation of the maritime trade from the harbour of Trapani in Sicily. The manifest gives bills of lading from January 1840 to March 1849. The pre-printed manifests are completed in ink giving the name of the freight ship and its captain the destination and then details of its freight i.e. type and quantity of merchandise names of senders and recipients. Trapani boasts some of Europe's oldest salt marshes and salt extraction has been a major business for centuries which still flourishes to the present day. By the nineteenth century Sicilian sea salt was exported to European countries as far away as Norway and Russia. These shipping manifests document that it was sent to destinations as far afield as Constantinople Abo Stavanger Carlscrona Stockholm Bergen Odessa Reval and Riga. Clearly some of the shippers acted on their own account being both captains of the ship and shipper whereas others acted on commission. The shipping routes went through Russian waters which explains the accounts kept by the Russian Vice Consulate.

The cost of raising money has weighed down the energies of many enterprising men. Usury Law restrictions have afforded no alleviation in the hour of need. Only the third copy we've handled in over thirty years. The previous owner and her husband warrant a biography at the Heinz History Center website: "Paul James Baum son of William and Susanna Baum was born in 1895. In December 1917 he enlisted in the U.S. Army's Signal Reserve Corps and received a commission in the Balloon Division of the Corps' Aviation Section. In April 1918 Paul James Baum applied for a military discharge as executive head and an irreplaceable employee of the Lawrenceville Bronze Company in Zelienople Pennsylvania. He received an honorable discharge from the Army in July 1918. Paul James Baum remained associated with the Lawrenceville Bronze Company and was its vice-president through the 1930s. He then became a realtor. Paul James Baum died in 1965. On June 30 1923 Paul James Baum married Helen Louise Kohler b. 1895 the daughter of David Sherman Kohler of the Oliver Iron & Steel Company in Pittsburgh. The Baums lived at 374 Roup Avenue in the Friendship section of Pittsburgh. Before her marriage Helen Louise Kohler Baum taught typing and shorthand at Reno Hall a business school in Pittsburgh. In 1926 she joined the board of directors of the Home for Aged Protestants in Wilkinsburg and was its president from 1945 to 1969. Helen Louise Kohler Baum died on January 21 1977." Since Roup Ave. where they lived intersects Baum Boulevard we may be permitted to speculate that the boulevard was named after a member of Paul Baum's family. The Pittsburgh Board of Trade unknown
