réf. 3384Paris: Imprimerie et Librairie Administratives de Paul Dupont 1858. . Small folio late 19th century marbled boards cloth spine slightly abraded; original blue printed wrappers bound in; blindstamp of the Boston Public Library on the first page; unopened. The July 1858 issue of "Annales du Commerce Exterieur". The immediate cause of the 1857 panic was the failure of the New York branch of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Co. a major financial force that collapsed following widespread embezzlement. Others causes included the removal of funds from U.S. banks by British investors which raised questions about the overall U.S. economy. The fall of grain prices which spread economic misery into rural areas. The collapse of land speculation programs that depended on new rail routes ruining thousands of investors. Investor confidence was further shaken in mid-September when 30000 pounds of gold were lost at sea in a shipment from the San Francisco Mint to eastern banks. The gold and SS Central America sank during the North Carolina Hurricane of 1857. Public confidence in the government's ability to back its paper currency with specie was shaken as well. Eventually the panic and depression spread to Europe South America and the Far East. No recovery was evident in the United States for a year and a half and the full impact did not dissipate until the Civil War. The South was hurt less than the other regions of the country and many there concluded that the superiority of their economic system had been vindicated this has been posited as a contributing factor to the secession of many of the Southern States resulting in the Civil War. Pages 57-62 outline the trade between France and the United States during the years 1856-1857 with a retrospective look at past trade. 1785réf. 57874Mexico. November 22 1785. Announcing the Compañia Real de Filipinas Regulating Trade with the Philippines A very rare Mexico City printing of the announcement of the creation of the Royal Company of the Philippines by Spanish royal decree in 1785 which regulated and effectively monopolized trade with the Philippines. This copy bears the manuscript rubric of Don Bernardo de Gálvez and signature of his secretary Joseph de Gorraes. Gálvez then Viceroy of New Spain ordered this broadside printed for the reason that "An Establishment so important and of such general interest should be understood and known by all" our translation. The creation of the Royal Company would be particularly relevant to residents of Mexico as most if not all of the trade with the Philippines would come through New Spain. Accompanying the announcement this broadside also prints Articles 1 2 14 21 and 100 of the royal decree which were considered to effectively summarize the purpose and mechanics of the new Company. The articles printed here proclaim that the Company is to enjoy the protection of the Crown for at least twenty-five years establish a fund to back its shares describe how shares and subscriptions could be purchased and organize a general meeting of shareholders. Notably absent from this broadside is the important article of the decree which closed Manila's ports to foreign vessels giving the Company an effective monopoly on all trade between Asia and the Americas. The Royal Company of the Philippines quickly gained vast wealth from this lucrative deal transporting commodities such as indigo coffee sugar spices and cotton across the Pacific. Regardless of its initial success the Company did not endure - the wave of rebellions against Spanish rule in Central and South America in the early 19th century quickly rendered it obsolete and the company was officially dissolved in 1834. A rare broadside announcing this important Royal Decree to the people of the Western Hemisphere; OCLC records only one copy at the Bancroft Library. Broadside printed on two joined sheets of sealed paper 23½ x 17 inches in total. Old folds and light creases a few small worm holes. Very good. OCLC 21747301. unknown books

Oblong 4to. With a very interesting presentation note from a previous Philadelphia owner Alfred Darrach dated 1928 affixed to the front pastedown identifying the original owner his grandfather as Christian Gobrecht 1785-1844 artist engraver embosser inventor engraver to the U.S. Mint and from 1840-1844 the 4th United States Engraver of the Mint where he was responsible for the creation of several new models and designs including the famous Seated Liberty design which appeared on a variety of American coins from 1836 through 1890. Gobrecht designed many notable medals coins and dies during his career but he also "invented a speaking doll and later a camera lucida. He also produced engravings for calico printers and dies for bookbinders. He engraved the brass dies for embossing the Morocco covers of the Boston Token from 1831 - 1836 as well as the eagle cover of the Philadelphia Token. Among the medals he engraved were the Charles Willson Peale medal the Franklin Institute medal etc ." - DAB. A remarkable specimen album in and of itself all the more so for having belonged to one of America's most important engravers. We cannot say for sure but it is entirely likely that if Gobrecht himself did not design many of the dies for this embosser he may have used the album for his own work and possibly removed the cards which are no longer present. 1803réf. 10056Konigsberg: Goebbels und Unzer 1803. First Edition. Contemporary paper backed boards and label. Very good; spine label partially abraded. 8vo xvi 1 - 232 pp. Statesman statistician and economist the author had an eminent career in public policy making and teaching. He was for a time the principal advisor to Hardenberg and present at Paris for the peace conference in 1813 as well as the Congress of Vienna. He was also responsible for the complete overhaul and modernization of the Prussian satistical bureau beginning in 1810. He was the author of several books on statistics as well as economics and law. The work offered here is his first publication. It is a detailed exposition of how the social and commercial maintenance of the guild system is an obstacle to the economic progress of the state and its populace. Given the author's proximity to the center of Prussian power and government it can be read as a 'map' for the future development of the German state under Prussian leadership after unification.
