1935réf. 46666Asheville: Asheville Chamber of Commerce n. d. ca 1935. 1935. NORTH CAROLINA. First edition. 8vo. 9" x 8" color pictorial wrappers folds to 9" x 4" n. p. 16 pp. including covers illustrated throughout with black & white photographs. An attractive promotional touting Asheville's natural resources climate golf courses recreational opportunities economic growth homes schools churches summer camps transportation network etc. The photographs depict various hotels the Asheville Golf and Country Club the Biltmore Estate the high school municipal buildings the American Enka Co. the Pigeon River Dam a bird's eye view of the city views of the surrounding mountain landscape and a panorama of the Smoky Mountains. The scenic photographs are attributed to "the late George Masa." A native of Japan George Masa 1881-1933 born Masahara Izuka immigrated to Asheville in 1915. He rose from working in the laundry at the Grove Park Inn to become one of the most respected photographers in Asheville and played a large role in exploring and creating the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The estimated date of the brochure is based on the 1934 opening of the national park which is here announced "America's Newest Adventureland for Vacationists" and described as being only in the "initial stages" of development. Another clue is the imputed date of another edition which suggests that the Miller Printing Co. may have taken over the contract for this publication by 1937. It was almost certainly not printed after 1940 as the population given for Asheville is derived from the 1930 census. OCLC finds only one edition that might correspond to the present brochure same size same printer no pagination given held only by Appalachian State. NUC finds no corresponding editions. Not in Thornton which lists several other editions see entries 369-376. 1801réf. 57454Philadelphia: Printed by Zachariah Poulson Junior February 9 1801. With a Contemporary Manuscript Document The official Articles of Association for the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce adopted when it was founded on January 5 1801 along with a manuscript document regarding changes to those rules written shortly after. The titlepage of the ARTICLES OF ASSOCIATION exists in two states; this is the much rarer state which specifies the month and date in the imprint. The Chamber was established according to these articles "for the purpose of aiding the Trade of the City of Philadelphia by carrying into effect such Rules and Regulations as may from time to time be established with respect to our Commerce and the adjustment of Mercantile differences between each other." The Chamber of Commerce was founded exclusively for merchants with rule XV stating that "No person can become a Member of this Institution who is not a citizen of the United States and a trading merchant of the city of Philadelphia either as a ship owner importer or exporter or a marine insurance broker." This rule was reversed in 1834 when the Chamber of Commerce was absorbed into the Philadelphia Board of Trade and became open to all businessmen. The accompanying manuscript document dated March 2 1801 is addressed to Thomas Willing Francis and regards the proposed reconsideration of Rule XII which states that members may not refuse to submit their accounts to the Chamber in the case of a legal dispute as well as a handful of other motions. Thomas Willing Francis 1767-1815 was a Philadelphia native from a long line of Pennsylvania businessmen. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1814 he entered the family firm of Willing & Francis - the firm which had sent the first recorded American ship to China for the purpose of trading opium nearly a decade before. He was a founding member of the Chamber of Commerce achieved the rank of captain in the Second Philadelphia City Cavalry and served as a director of numerous other Philadelphia organizations. A significant document in the economic and civic history of Philadelphia with a rare manuscript addition from less than a month after publication and two months after the Chamber's founding. Contemporary marbled wrappers. Spine ends chipped corners a bit worn. Manuscript with some old folds and light creases. Very good. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 1148. SABIN 61974. unknown

The Problem of Japanese Trade Expansion in the Post-War Situation. New York: International Secretariat of the Institute of Pacific Relations. First edition 1940. Red cloth board with gilt title on spine. 93 pages. 8vo. This 93 page essay examines Japan's economic strategies and ambitions for trade expansion following World War II. Authored by Miriam S. Farley a research associate at the Institute of Pacific Relations since 1933 and later editor of Far Eastern Survey the book offers insights into Japan's pursuit of economic growth and its implications for global trade dynamics. During the late 1930s and early 1940s Japan's economy was rapidly industrializing with manufacturing and mining accounting for over 30% of its GDP. This industrial growth was closely linked to Japan's military expansion and its quest for natural resources leading to increased tensions with Western powers. Ex libris on front pastedown. Overall very good condition. 3 Inside Japan. New York: Far East Reporter 1950s. A critical perspective on postwar Japan highlighting the challenges faced by its people under U.S. military occupation and the broader political landscape of the early Cold War era. Original pictorial wrappers. 21 pages. 8vo. Illustrated with a woodcut-style image of a wounded Japanese man on crutches. The contents document rising anti-war sentiment among Japanese citizens particularly their resistance to further militarization and economic policies imposed by the U.S. government. Opening with the bold declaration "We want neither to lead a miserable life any longer nor to be dragged into another war" the text situates itself within Japan's growing opposition to Cold War power struggles. It discusses mass protests including demonstrations against the forced use of Japanese land for U.S. military bases and details how economic hardship and environmental destruction-such as radiation-contaminated tuna from American hydrogen bomb tests in the Pacific-fueled widespread frustration among the Japanese population. The pamphlet argues that American occupation policies continued to erode Japan's sovereignty tying the nation to U.S. strategic interests rather than allowing for true postwar reconstruction on Japan's terms. The text references significant events such as Japanese protests against military requisitions including U.S. land seizures in areas like Uchinada a fishing port repurposed for artillery training and the selection of Japan as a maneuvering ground for Korean War operations. It critiques American soldiers' conduct abroad arguing that local resentment stemmed not only from military presence but also from cultural insensitivity and racial hierarchies imposed by occupying forces. The pamphlet warns that American diplomacy in Japan was at risk of alienating the very people it sought to influence portraying Japan as caught between U.S. and Soviet interests in the broader Cold War struggle. Overall very good condition. unknown
