Marshal de Castries and Marquis de Vogué called upon Anquetil to restore authentic and reliable memoirs and render justice to one of Louis XIV's greatest generals; they lent him for this purpose 142 notebooks of memoirs of 32p. folio and 14 volumes of letters. Anquetil therefore undertook a vast work of compilation and made the Duke speak in the first person using the letters as aid. All the documents were subsequently deposited in the Sainte Geneviève library. Blue stamp ""Bibliothèque Christian Kieher"" on endpapers. Chez Moutard hardcover

Offprint from Reviews of Modern Physics 21 1949. 434-444pp. 268 x 198 mm. Original printed wrappers. Very good. First Edition Offprint Issue. Publication of the Pauli-Villars regularization P-V an important principle in quantum theory. P-V based on earlier work by Richard Feynman Ernst Stueckelberg and Dominique Rivier is a procedure that "isolates divergent terms from finite parts in loop calculations in field theory in order to renormalize the theory" Wikipedia. Pauli and Villars's paper was a direct inspiration for Julian Schwinger's "On gauge invariance and vacuum polarization" 1951 his greatest and most-cited paper; Schwinger one of the founders of modern quantum electrodynamics shared the Nobel Prize with Feynman and Tomonaga in 1965. . unknown

The more desirable 1784 edition as the earlier one published by the Abbé de Margon between 1734-1758 was found to be quite incomplete. 16mo. Volumes bound in uniform full speckled calf. Simple binding style; single-rule border in gilt to top and bottom boards; spine in six compartments with decorative gilt bands rather than raised; compartments with simple decorative devices blindstamped title compartment in brown leather lettered in gilt gilt largely faded as with the volume number in a lower compartment. Leather with some darkening to extremities spines darkened. Boards rubbed mostly at extremities. Runners once tooled with simple gilt line pattern now largely lost from rubbing. This set complete with all plates including the frontis-portrait of Villars which is often lacking; folding plates of the Battles of Fridlingue Malpaquet Denain and Friborg. The Battle of Fridlingue and Malpaquet hastily folded some corresponding closed tears at fore-folds. Textblock with some age-toning though not exceedingly so; occasional spots of foxing. Paper loss at top corner of final two leaves of vol.II not at all affecting text. With errata for volumes 1-3 bound in at rear errata leaves for vol.I and II at rear of vol.I errata page for vol.III printed on verso-p.483. "Table Alphabétique des Noms Propres et des Matieres" index at rear of volume IV. Overall this is an attractive copy of this important work by one of Louis XIV's most important generals and one of only six generals to have ever been elevated to Marshal General of France.
