Enlarged 2nd German edition of the first book on gemstones in English language. – Contents, Editions: »A Lapidary or, the History of Precious Stones«, a seminal reference work for jewellers of it's times and a book also of importance for the development of geological science, had first been published by the Cambridge editor Thomas Buck in 1652. A first German edition had appeared in 1675, published in Hamburg by Naumann & Wolff. Nicols' treatise is described as „ ... the first English work on precious stones, which [probably for the mystic elements which it contains] proved highly popular, and was translated into several European languages...“ (Copinger). The author lists 89 precious stones in just as many chapters, but also reports about fossils including amber, as well as corals, pearls etc. For each stone he provides information about the forms, appearance, properties (including alleged magical, mystical and medical claims), origins, etymological meaning of names, classification, uses and notes about market value. The book puts a particular focus on practical aspects related to jewellery, such as enhancing stones with reflective foils or dyestuffs, hardening softer stones, and the related subjects of adulteration. – Present second German language edition is substantially enlarged with 32 pages, containing a comprehensive index of terms, a preface and several additional explanatory notes within the text. – Provenance: Fly leaf recto with a pen and ink remark „Ignatii Widman“ (18th ct.) and an additional owner's remark with pencil dated 1932. – Condition: Bottom part of vellum spine skilfully renewed, boards occasionally worn, otherwise well preserved copy. – Rarity: Though well represented in institutions the German editions of »A Lapidary» from 1675 and 1734 are particularly hard to find in trade. – Reference: Catalogue of printed books in the Wellcome Historical Medical Library IV, p. 236; Copinger, W.A. Supplement to Hain’s Repertorium bibliographicum I, no. 4819 (for the 1st German edition of 1675); Duveen, D.I. Bibliotheca alchemica et chemica, p. 432; Sinkankas, J. Gemology, no. 4758; Young, J. Bibliotheca chemica II, p. 138.

In French. 63 p. The very rare autographed copy of this lecture given in Lebanon on January 20, 1937, at the Youth Center, by Ostrorog after his serving in China as Assistant High Commissioner, a French diplomat from a noble Polish family, who had served as Assistant High Commissioner in China and Syria in the 1930s. Signed and inscribed by Ostrorog as "Par Mahid, Avec autre au mille amitié, Damas, 1938". On the eve of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) between the Chinese and the Empire of Japan which is often regarded as the beginning of World War II in Asia, French ex-Assistant High Commissioner in China Ostrorog gave a lecture about Chinese power and policy. Some titles from book: "La Chine.; Le monde au temps de Confucius.; Humanisme Confuceen.; Opposition de l'humanisme Chinois a la morale idealiste de l'occident.; Facteur grammatical.; Universalite des caracteres.; Facteur geographique.; Facteur moral.; La republique des philosophes.; Reaction de Huang Ti au 3me siecle avant notre ere.; Evolution historique dans le cadre de l'unite.; Isolement.; Arrivee des Europeens au XVIme siecle les marchands et les missionnaires.; La querelle des rites condamnation des Jesuites.; Eclat du couchant Kien Lung.; Lettre de Kien Lung a Georges III.; Guerre de l'Opium.; Qeuvre des missions en Chine.; Tseu-hi et Abdul-Hamid.; Le Japon.; Propagande de Moscou.; Succes du mouvement nationaliste.; Intervention Japonaise en Mandchourie.; L'Unite Chinoise menacee.; La Grande pitie.; L'avenir de la Chine.". From the last chapter: "In our contract, the Chinese until now have taken only the faults and vices of Western civilizations. There is, however, something else to choose from and perhaps the time is near when the Chinese will understand it. Whether they are few in number, fifty, forty, ten, or five only, that will suffice. And on that day, with the power of assimilation which has always characterized it, China will integrate, in a way, all the foreign contributions of a moral or cultural order, to rebuild its unity, to resume the continuity of his story, and rediscover his genius." Only two copies in OCLC: 42804470. Signed and inscribed by Stanislas Ostrorog.

See also: Megan Nourcia "X Marks the Spot: Women Writers Map the Empire for British Children 1790-1895" pp. 33-34. A tiny bit of wear to the top of the front joint occasional trivial marginal stains or the faintest of browning but still a fine copy clean and fresh internally with brightly colored plates in a well-preserved lustrous binding. Attractively bound and enhanced with excellent contemporary hand coloring this charming introduction to geography aimed at young readers contains numerous plates depicting the traditional dress of cultures from around the world. Beginning in London and spreading to almost every corner of Western Europe the book then guides us to Asia Africa and finally to the Americas ending in Tierra del Fuego. First published in 1817 "A Geographical Present" was the author's most successful work. There is little known about the life of Mary Anne Venning but according to Megan Nourcia the present work "had a broad circulation launching her career as a scientific writer and establishing her authority as an educator of the young." Nourcia also notes that "Venning's texts were marketed as educational aids of keepsake quality"; as we see here the attractive binding and lovely hand-colored plates add an element of luxury to this pedagogical work and the fine condition of our copy suggests that it was carefully looked after by its presumably young previous owners. Printed for Harvey and Darton unknown
