Un plat parfaitement séparé du volume En portugais Very rare 2nd second edition of the only treatise on Hebrew laws and customs written in Portuguese language and printed for the Portuguese Sephardic communities in Northern Europe. Treasure of Jewish Laws that the people of Israel must know and observe composed by Rabbi Hacham Menasseh ben Israel in Amsterdam, 1st edition 1647; and this 2nd edition in 1710. In 8. º (18x12 cm) (v) -201 - (iv) folium. Binding (worn out at edges) contemporary full calf gilt at spine. Engraved frontispiece. Contains title page to Third Part (Of feasts and fasts throughout the year, the people of Israel must know and observe) and the Last part (in which contains all the precepts, rites and ceremonies concerning to a perfect economy dedicated to the very noble and magnificent lords Abraham and Ishak Israel Pereyra). MENASSEH BEN ISRAEL was born in Lisbon in 1604. Very young of age he went to Amsterdam with his father, Joseph ben Israel, and became a disciple of Haham Yshac Uziel. In 1622 he was appointed professor of the Portuguese Jewish community in Amsterdam and, four years later, he founded the first Hebraic typography in Amsterdam; printing small books in Portuguese, Spanish and Hebrew languages. Menasseh had a decisive contribution in reopening England to the Jewish people, closed since the time of King Edward Ist. He went personally to London and had talks with Cromwell who gave him an honorific pension he never profit of. Menasseh died in 1658 after returning from London. He was portrait by Rembrant. Inocêncio VI, 211. 'In a book dealer which trade was new and old books, I found a complete copy of the Treasure. I've never seen another. '

1993300 pages. Index. Bibliography. Illustrated with colour photos, black and white photos and images of the petroglyphs discussed. "Describes, among many other things, the solitary spiritual meditations of young people in the mountains, a form of education once essential to all those who wished to succeed in life with their particular talents... Opens a discussion of some of the issues in rock research that relate to 'notating' and 'writing' on the landscape, around the world and through the millennia. This landmark publication presents a well-researched hypothesis to explain the evolution of symbolic or iconic writing from sign language, trail signs and from the geometric and iconic imagery of the dreams and visions of shamans and neophyte hunters." - from dust jacket. Clean, bright and unmarked with negligible wear. A beautiful copy of this interesting work. Book

Enlarged 2nd German edition of the first book on gemstones in English language. – Contents, Editions: »A Lapidary or, the History of Precious Stones«, a seminal reference work for jewellers of it's times and a book also of importance for the development of geological science, had first been published by the Cambridge editor Thomas Buck in 1652. A first German edition had appeared in 1675, published in Hamburg by Naumann & Wolff. Nicols' treatise is described as „ ... the first English work on precious stones, which [probably for the mystic elements which it contains] proved highly popular, and was translated into several European languages...“ (Copinger). The author lists 89 precious stones in just as many chapters, but also reports about fossils including amber, as well as corals, pearls etc. For each stone he provides information about the forms, appearance, properties (including alleged magical, mystical and medical claims), origins, etymological meaning of names, classification, uses and notes about market value. The book puts a particular focus on practical aspects related to jewellery, such as enhancing stones with reflective foils or dyestuffs, hardening softer stones, and the related subjects of adulteration. – Present second German language edition is substantially enlarged with 32 pages, containing a comprehensive index of terms, a preface and several additional explanatory notes within the text. – Provenance: Fly leaf recto with a pen and ink remark „Ignatii Widman“ (18th ct.) and an additional owner's remark with pencil dated 1932. – Condition: Bottom part of vellum spine skilfully renewed, boards occasionally worn, otherwise well preserved copy. – Rarity: Though well represented in institutions the German editions of »A Lapidary» from 1675 and 1734 are particularly hard to find in trade. – Reference: Catalogue of printed books in the Wellcome Historical Medical Library IV, p. 236; Copinger, W.A. Supplement to Hain’s Repertorium bibliographicum I, no. 4819 (for the 1st German edition of 1675); Duveen, D.I. Bibliotheca alchemica et chemica, p. 432; Sinkankas, J. Gemology, no. 4758; Young, J. Bibliotheca chemica II, p. 138.
