rif. 9563Black & white illus. throughout. Unpaginated. Small 8vo pictorial softcover title on spine. Zürich: JRP Ringier 2009. Artist's book published for Monk's curated exhibition Richard Prince and the Revolution 25 June-10 September 2009 at ProjecteSD in Barcelona. From the publisher's description: "Monk's new book 'Studio Visit' takes as its starting point a number of Richard Prince's publications. Visually similar to those iconic artist's book of the 1990s this publication is also very different from them in many other ways. Jonathan Monk opens the door to his secret studio. For many years Monk has been considered an exemplary post-studio artist working from a small desk a computer and a mobile phone. This publication reveals that he actually has a studio in the traditional sense of the word. A space in which he can be free for a moment to think about what is to be done. and if it has been done already never mind." In fine condition. unknown books
rif. 10809Color photographic illus. Photographic postcard mailed. Brooklyn NY: Jonathan Monk & Jonathan A. Hill Bookseller Inc. 2023. The latest edition in Jonathan Monk’s series of photographic postcards. Postcards are signed by the artist and mailed post-paid from the mailbox pictured on the front which is located in Brooklyn Heights near the northern entrance of the Promenade. The final condition of each postcard rests with the vagaries of the postal system. Monk b. 1969 has previously organized these postcard editions in Berlin Paris Brussels Mexico Winnipeg Llandudno Reykjavik Kirby Muxloe Vienna Melbourne Dublin Tokyo San Francisco Malmo Basel etc. ⧠From the ongoing conversation between Adam Carr and Jonathan Monk published by Collecteurs accessed April 2023: “I’d been thinking about postcard pieces and how I could make something really specific to a particular post box. The post box for me was a really important receptacle for communication. Sadly it’s becoming a dysfunctional part of our lives – I’ve lost faith in the postal system… but anyway the title was the thing that got me excited by the idea – simply descriptive but funny and poetic. Once I set the idea in motion it was quite easy to add cities to the list – all I need is a willing participant to post off the cards. These people generally become the publishers.” “Jonathan Monk is engaged in an on-going series of signed postcard editions all with the same title Picture Post Card Posted from the Post Box Pictured. At his solo ICA exhibition in London in December 2005 Monk made a postcard of the nearest postbox to the gallery in Waterloo Place to add to the similar postcards already published for shows in New York Edinburg Frankfurt Hong Kong and so on.”–Jeremy Cooper Artists’ Postcards: A Compendium 2012 p. 138. unknown books

1822rif. H29705London: A. J. Valpy 1822. Wraps. Very good. Disbound pamphlet from "The Pamphleteer" a compilation of various pamphlets speeches articles and letters published quarterly and with uncirculated stock bound up at the end of each year and issued as an annual volume. This is actually three different pamphlets with three title pages with continuous pagination from p. 303-355; the middle pamphlet is a stated third edition. The consensus seems to be that the first and third pamphlets are by Samuel Butler and the middle one the letter to the Bishop of Bristol is by James Henry Monk. A scheme was passed in 1822 for an annual honours examination in classics to which those who had obtained honours in the Senate House Examination were to be admissible. This was a limited concession only since the candidate for classical honours had first to win mathematical honours while there was no similar condition the other way but the foundation of the Classical Tripos does mark an important broadening of the field of study. In the same year a scheme for a Previous Examination was passed which provided that in their fifth term men should pass an examination in the Greek Testament Paley's Evidences and a Greek and a Latin author though the standard was elementary. The general academic level was rising all round. The mathematical curriculum was deepened and extended; the tests for medical degrees were made more stringent; the evils of non-residence and inefficiency among the professoriate were gradually removed. In 1809 Monk was elected Regius Professor of Greek in succession to Porson. The establishment of the classical tripos at Cambridge was in great measure due to his efforts. In 1822 he was appointed Dean of Peterborough. Very good short tear to front page minor expert strengthening along spine. A. J. Valpy unknown
