The screenplay is based on the novel "Die Geschwister Oppermann" by Lion Feuchtwanger. The screenplay was realized and aired as a TV miniseries in 1983. Telling the story of the family Oppenheim a dynasty in furniture manufacturing. The name of Feuchtwanger's original novel "Geschwister Oppenheim" was changed to "Geschwister Oppermann" due to the efforts of a German National Socialist with the same name who forced the name change. The screenplay starts at the beginning of November of 1931 telling the tragic story of the family Oppermann in the years 1932 and 1933 against the backdrop of the Nazis taking power in Germany.
