VERY RARE. With a Selection from her Correspondence and Notices of the Progress of the Musical Drama in England. He trained his two daughters as operatic singers. Maria 1808-1836 became the most famous singer of her time a living legend after she debuted in the role of Rosina in "Barber". Her father brought his family troupe to New York City where they performed the first Italian opera in NYC. Rossini Donizetti Chopin Mendelssohn and Liszt were strong supporters. Only recently has the author Condesa de Merlin been appreciated as pivotal both to the Cuban nationalist tradition and to 19th Century Spanish-American literature. A second and third memoir of Malibran appears in vol. 2 along with selections from her correspondence anecdotes and finishes with a set of Italian sonnets and odes addressed to Madame Malibran. Illustrated early edition of the collected works of Teofilo Folengo the master of macaronic verse and precursor of Rabelais. – Author Content Edition: Teofilo Folengo 1491-1544 a benedict monk writing under the pseudonym Merlin Cocaio is considered the main protagonist of macaronic literature a blending of cultivated Latin and popular Italian. With his verse Folengeo achieved comical effects and thereby also parodied the humanist educational ethos. – Present 4th edition of »Opus Merlini Cocaii« contains Folgengo's grotesque-humoristic magnum opus »Baldus« here titled »Phantasiae Macaronicon« furthermore the parodistic love poem »Zanitonella« the fable »Moschaea« about a battle between flies and ants and finally some of the author's letters and epigrams. Folengo's focus on contemporary life and customs as well as his humour made his poems enjoy great popularity in the 16th century in which numerous editions of them appeared. His writings also inspired Rabelais who found in it the prototype of his figures 'Pantagruel' and 'Gargantua'. A first complete edition appeared in 1521.
