Illustrated early edition of the collected works of Teofilo Folengo the master of macaronic verse and precursor of Rabelais. – Author Content Edition: Teofilo Folengo 1491-1544 a benedict monk writing under the pseudonym Merlin Cocaio is considered the main protagonist of macaronic literature a blending of cultivated Latin and popular Italian. With his verse Folengeo achieved comical effects and thereby also parodied the humanist educational ethos. – Present 4th edition of »Opus Merlini Cocaii« contains Folgengo's grotesque-humoristic magnum opus »Baldus« here titled »Phantasiae Macaronicon« furthermore the parodistic love poem »Zanitonella« the fable »Moschaea« about a battle between flies and ants and finally some of the author's letters and epigrams. Folengo's focus on contemporary life and customs as well as his humour made his poems enjoy great popularity in the 16th century in which numerous editions of them appeared. His writings also inspired Rabelais who found in it the prototype of his figures 'Pantagruel' and 'Gargantua'. A first complete edition appeared in 1521.
