"Platos praise of the poets Sappho and Anacreon (Phaedrus 235c) is a sincere tribute to their vivid presentations of the shock of love." Sappho's poetry centers on passion and love for various personages and genders. The word "lesbian" derives from the name of the island of her birth, Lesbos; her name is also the origin of its less common synonym sapphic. The narrators of many of her poems speak of infatuations and love (sometimes requited, sometimes not) for various women, but descriptions of physical acts between women are few. Slim quarto. James Strong was born in New York City in 1822. His father, Thomas, came from England in 1815. The son was left an orphan at an early age, and in 1839 began the study of medicine, but the failure of his health led to its abandonment. He was graduated at Wesleyan in 1844, taught two years in Poultney, Vermont, and then failing health again compelled his retirement to a farm in Newtown, Long Island. Eighteen months later he settled at Flushing, where he followed biblical studies. He held various local offices, took an active interest in town development, and projected and built the Flushing Railroad, of which he was President. He gave gratuitous private instruction to classes in Greek and Hebrew, which led to his first literary labor, the preparation of brief manuals of Greek, Hebrew, and Chaldee grammar (1856-1869). From 1858 till 1861 he was professor of Biblical Literature and acting president of Troy University. He then returned to Flushing to engage in public improvements. Starting in 1868 he was Professor of Exegetical Theology in Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, New Jersey. Dr. Strong traveled in Egypt and Palestine in 1874, and was a member of the American branch of the Palestine Exploration Committee. This important poetic and scholarly work seems to be left off of the inventories of his numerous publications. This is a very remarkable book in many ways. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W146.

1780Two volumes. pp. 201; 240 + Engraved portrait plates. Small 12mo. Uncut. Contemporary French half leather bindings, spines worn. Printed bookplate of Jan Paulus Schumacher. Edited by A. E. Cailleau. Pierre du Pallet, called by the name of Abelard, was a successful educator in the Cathedral School of Notre Dame when (in 1115) he was appointed tutor to Heloise, the beautiful and talented 17 year old niece of cannon Fulbert, with whom he was lodging. They fell madly in love and were forced to flee together to Brittany. After Heloise gave birth to a son they were secretly married and returned to Paris. Relatives of Heloise would not be distracted from their revenge and one night they surprised Abelard in his bedroom and castrated him. In shame, Abelard joined the Abbey St. Denis as a monk, and Heloise became a nun. As they both rose to prominence (and Abelard in philosophical and religious controversy), they kept up a loving correspondence. In the end, their corpses were laid to rest together, and their tale became legend. Though Abelard exerted great influence on the minds of his contemporaries and the course of medieval thought, he would be little known to us today - but for his connection with Heloise. Their letters are the main source for details of Abelard's life and his love. "Then there is no more left but this, that in our doom the sorrow yet to come shall be no less than the love we two have already known" - Heloise speaking to Abelard as she agreed to their marriage. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! It tells of a young French man who falls for a fisherman's granddaughter the titular Graziella during a trip to Naples, Italy; they are separated when he must return to France, and she soon dies. Based on the author's experiences with a tobacco-leaf folder while in Naples in the early 1810s, Graziella was first written as a journal, and intended to serve as commentary for Lamartine's poem 'Le Premier Regret'." **PRICE JUST REDUCED! 1761Two Volumes. pp. Frontis, Engraved Title, XVI (lacks 2 leaves in this section - apparently blanks), 611, [1]; Engraved Title, 493, [3] + Engraved frontis portrait of Boccaccio. Both title pages are fully engraved, each with a vignette showing Cupid sharing tales with Boccaccio as women wait on the veranda of a house in the background. Italian text. 8vo. 205 mm. Wide margined; uncut; deckle edges. Some slight age stain. Old tape repair at frontis hinge. No front free fly-leaf. Early vellum backed marbled boards binding. An attractive (if mis-leading) edition. The Decameron is a collection of novellas by Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375). It is a 14th-century medieval allegory told as a frame story encompassing 100 tales by ten young people. Boccaccio probably began composing the work in 1350, and finished it in 1351 or 1353. The bawdy tales of love in The Decameron range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit, practical jokes, and life lessons contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary import, it documents life in 14th-century Italy - From Wiki. A false imprint - Because of its sometimes erotic nature, printers and publishers were often loathe to claim the Decameron as their own. Therefore 'Amsterdamo' appears in the imprint of this edition. It was not printed in Amsterdam, but almost certainly in Venice, by Antonio Locatelli. There are several similar, but different editions. They are identified by examination of the occasional ornaments and a notice at the very end of volume two, which in our example reads: "Si Vende Lire Venti Venete." (Sell this for 20 pounds). No priority noted for the variants. W118
1855pp. 2 [Publisher's catalogue], (2) [Title and copyright pages], 500 + 18 full page steel engravings. printed on yellow paper. Text foxed. Early autograph ownership of William Hay. 12mo. 175 mm. Original red embossed patterned cloth binding. Spine lettered in gold gilt. Hardbound. Very good. The publisher, Calvin Blanchard (1808-1868), had a disreputable reputation. At his shop on Nassau Street 'you could buy all kinds of books that your minister would frown upon - whether for free thought or for obscenity made little difference to this unsavoury Calvin.' Boccaccio is seen as not terribly erotic these days, but in the era before the Civil War it was considered 'stimulating' and 'saucy'. SCARCE. EROS 2 / York DC16
