1863ref. OV-032Boston: Wright & Potter State Printers 1863. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Massachusetts Commissioners. Report of the Commissioners upon the Troy and Greenfield Railroad and Hoosac Tunnel to His Excellency the Governor and the Honorable the Executive Council of the State of Massachusetts. Boston: Wright & Potter State Printers 1863. Original 1863 Massachusetts state report on the Troy and Greenfield Railroad and the Hoosac Tunnel issued during a pivotal period in the long effort to construct the tunnel through Hoosac Mountain. The volume includes the Commissioners' report together with extensive engineering material concerning the railroad and tunnel project including reports by Charles S. Storrow Benjamin H. Latrobe and James Laurie. Illustrated with engineering tables diagrams and folding material including the large folding "Profile of the Hoosac Mountain Tunnel" which is present and remains in good condition. The report is an important contemporary document from one of the major American railroad and civil-engineering projects of the nineteenth century. Bound in contemporary half brown leather over attractive multicolored marbled boards with leather corners and gilt-ruled and gilt-lettered spine reading "Hoosac Tunnel 1863." Binding remains solid and the boards remain firmly attached. Leather and boards show substantial but appropriate age-related rubbing scuffing surface loss and wear to corners and spine ends all clearly shown in the photographs. Marbled paper remains colorful and visually appealing. Interior is generally sound with age toning scattered light foxing occasional spotting and normal handling wear. One text leaf pages 99–100 of the Commissioners' Report is missing immediately before the Appendix; a remnant of the removed leaf remains at the gutter and the defect is photographed. The rear endpaper/hinge area shows separation and weakness but the binding remains intact and solid overall. A decorative previous-owner bookplate is present on the front pastedown. Also included is a separately printed 1865 railroad circular laid into the volume dated Utica New York October 9 1865 concerning a proposed "Southern Railroad." The sheet appears to be period railroad ephemera that was preserved with the book; no claim is made that it was originally issued with the 1863 report. Wright & Potter, State Printers hardcover

Dustjacket is protected in plastic sleeve. ; In this book Andrew Erskine examines the role and meaning of Troy in the changing relationship between Greeks and Romans, as Rome is transformed from a minor Italian city into a Mediterranean superpower. The book seeks to understand the significance of Rome's Trojan origins for the Greeks by considering the place of Troy and Trojans in Greek culture. It moves beyond the more familiar spheres of art and literature to explore the countless, overlapping, local traditions, the stories that cities told about themselves, a world often neglected by scholars. ; 336 pages
